You can also turn chat on or off after a stream starts. Chat activation is a YouTube setting; you do not need paid software or special equipment.
Before you set up the stream
Your channel must be verified and must not have had a livestreaming restriction in the past 90 days. Enabling livestreaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours. Check YouTube’s live streaming tips for current account eligibility. Mobile livestreaming has additional requirements, which can include a minimum subscriber count and a supported device; check YouTube’s mobile streaming instructions because these rules may change.
YouTube supports mobile, webcam, and encoder livestreams. Pick the route that fits what you are making; the chat setting is separate from that choice.

Turn on Live Chat in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, create a livestream or open the scheduled event in the Live Control Room.
- Open the event’s customization controls and enable Live Chat.
- Save the setting, then preview the event and confirm chat appears on its YouTube watch page.
YouTube documents the setting for new streams and says chat can also be switched on or off once a stream is in progress. Labels and available controls may differ by stream type or change over time; use YouTube’s current live chat and moderation instructions if the option is not where expected. Premieres have separate settings and restrictions.
Check who can see and use chat
Live Chat appears on the YouTube watch page, not inside an embedded video player. If you share an unlisted or private stream, privacy and account access affect who can open it. Verify the event’s audience and privacy settings, then check the watch page as a viewer. YouTube explains these distinctions in Learn about live streams and Manage live stream settings.

Embed live chat on your own website
An embedded chat is separate from an embedded video player: YouTube does not put chat inside the player, but it documents a separate chat iframe that can sit alongside a player on a website. The documented embed-chat feature is not available on mobile web.
- Get the video ID from the stream’s YouTube watch-page URL.
- Build the chat URL in this pattern, replacing both placeholders:
https://www.youtube.com/live_chat?v=VIDEO_ID&embed_domain=YOUR_DOMAIN. - Put the URL in an iframe on the page where you want chat to appear. Set
YOUR_DOMAINto the domain of that page; it must match or the chat iframe will not open.

Moderate messages during the stream
You can appoint trusted standard or managing moderators to help review chat. YouTube provides controls to delete an individual message, time a user out, or hide a user from the channel. If you want only approved people to post, consider live commentary mode, which restricts who can send messages. Set up roles and review the available controls in YouTube’s moderation guide.
What happens to chat after the stream?
Live Chat itself ends with the event. On an archived stream, Live Chat replay is available by default, and you can turn it off in the video’s customization settings. Viewers may be able to leave regular comments below the archived video. See YouTube’s moderation guide and Learn about live streams.

Troubleshooting: chat is missing or will not open
- The Live Chat option is unavailable: Check that livestreaming is enabled for the channel and that it meets YouTube’s current eligibility requirements. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
- You enabled chat but cannot see it: Open the stream’s YouTube watch page, not just an embedded video player, and verify that the event’s chat setting was saved.
- Website chat iframe fails to load: Make sure the
embed_domainvalue matches the domain hosting the iframe. The documented embed feature is not available on mobile web. - A viewer cannot access the chat: Check the stream’s privacy and audience access. Private or unlisted streams do not necessarily give every viewer access.
- Some viewers cannot post: Review moderator actions and any live commentary restrictions; those controls can limit or remove a user’s ability to participate.
