Spotify doesn’t use a conventional friend-request system: to connect, find someone’s profile and select Follow. To see their listening activity, use Spotify’s Listening Activity feed in the desktop app, or check Messages if Spotify has made its newer activity feature available to your account. Either way, you’ll only see activity the other person has chosen to share, and updates may be delayed.
How to find and follow a friend on Spotify
Spotify’s current process for connecting with another listener is to follow their personal profile. That is different from following one of their playlists or following an artist.

- Open Spotify and select Search.
- Enter your friend’s display name or username. On mobile, submit the search first if needed to reveal the filters.
- Choose Profiles in the search filters.
- Open the profile that matches your friend and select Follow.
Names are not unique, so check the profile photo, public playlists, recently played artists if shown, and any recognizable details before following. The safest option when search results are ambiguous is to ask your friend to open their profile, use its three-dot menu to share the profile link, and send it to you. Open the link and tap or click Follow. Spotify documents both methods in its guide to following friends and managing followers.

A follower is someone who follows your profile; mutual following simply means you follow each other. Neither mutual following nor following a playlist guarantees that you’ll see someone’s listening—each person’s activity and privacy settings still matter. Older instructions about finding Facebook friends through an “Add Friends” button may no longer match the current app; Spotify’s current support instructions point to profile search and shared profile links.

How to see what friends are listening to on desktop
Spotify’s established Listening Activity view is documented for the desktop app. “Friend Activity” is a label used in older explanations and may still appear in some interfaces; it refers to the related social-listening view.
- Open the installed Spotify desktop app.
- Look near the top of the window, beside your profile picture.
- Select Listening Activity to view available activity from people you follow.
If you don’t see the view in a browser, try the installed desktop app: Spotify’s support instructions describe the desktop experience, and the web player should not be assumed to have the same layout. The feed may show what someone is currently playing or a recent track, but Spotify cautions that it may not update in real time.
Check Listening Activity in Spotify Messages
Spotify has also introduced Listening Activity inside Messages, separate from the classic desktop feed. Where the feature is available, open Spotify, go to Messages, and open a conversation with a connected friend or family member. Look for their Listening Activity in the conversation. Depending on the interface and available controls, you may be able to play a track, add it to your library, open its menu, or react to it.

Spotify announced this Messages feature in January 2026 and said on June 17, 2026 that Listening Activity was available in group messaging. Availability, placement, and controls can vary by account, device, region, and rollout; a missing activity panel does not necessarily indicate a problem with your account. Spotify’s Messages feature announcement and update describes the rollout.
Turn on or manage your own listening activity
Your friend cannot make your activity visible for you. Choose the privacy setting on your own account if you want followers to see what you play.
On desktop
- Click your profile picture and select Settings.
- Find Listening Activity and insights.
- Turn on Listening activity (wording may appear as Share my listening activity on Spotify in some versions).
- If Spotify offers audience controls, choose who can see the activity.
On mobile
- Tap your profile picture.
- Tap Settings and privacy.
- Scroll to Privacy and Social.
- Turn on Listening activity.
Spotify’s Listening Activity instructions and privacy and social controls explain these settings. Labels and defaults can vary by platform and account; Spotify notes that some defaults differ for people under 18, so check the controls shown in your own app.

Hide what you’re listening to
For a temporary pause in sharing, start a Private Session. Spotify says it hides listening activity from followers while active and automatically resets after six hours. For ongoing privacy, turn off Listening activity on mobile or Share my listening activity on Spotify on desktop instead. Turning off your own sharing does not necessarily stop you from viewing activity that other people have chosen to share.

In the mobile app, tap your profile picture, choose View profile, then Followers. Tap the three-dot menu beside the person and choose Remove follower or Block. Removing someone does not stop them from following you again; blocking prevents them from following you or seeing your profile and listening activity. On desktop, open your profile and select Followers; Spotify says you can right-click a follower to follow or block them. Removing followers and managing the blocked list may require the mobile app. See Spotify’s follower-management instructions.
If a friend’s activity is missing or looks outdated
- Check the profile: Confirm you followed the right person, especially if several profiles have similar names. Ask for a profile link if necessary.
- Check their sharing settings: They may have turned off Listening Activity or started a Private Session. Following someone does not override their privacy choices.
- Allow for a delay: Spotify says activity may not refresh in real time; it does not promise a precise refresh interval.
- Use the right surface: The traditional activity feed is documented for desktop. Messages-based activity is a separate feature and may not be available to every account or conversation.
- Refresh your app: Update Spotify and your device’s operating system, restart Spotify, then log out and back in if needed. Reinstalling is a further troubleshooting option in Spotify’s support guidance.
- Check the connection: For Messages activity, make sure the person is connected to you in the relevant conversation and that the feature has reached your account.
These checks follow Spotify’s Listening Activity troubleshooting guidance. An empty feed is often a privacy or availability issue rather than proof that the follow failed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I add friends on Spotify without Facebook?
Yes. Search for their profile and select Follow, or ask them to share a direct link to their Spotify profile. Facebook is not required.
Do both people have to follow each other to see listening activity?
Not necessarily. Following is one-way, but activity visibility depends on the other person’s sharing settings and the feature you’re using. Messages-based activity may use its own connection requirements.

Can I see Spotify Friend Activity on iPhone or Android?

Does Spotify show listening activity in real time?
Not reliably. Spotify warns that Listening Activity may not update in real time, and it does not specify an exact refresh interval.
Can someone see what I listen to if I don’t follow them?
Visibility depends on the feature and your privacy settings. Review Listening Activity and its audience controls if you want to manage who can see your activity.
