Netflix does not offer a built-in way to upload your own subtitle file. You can choose from the subtitle tracks Netflix provides for a title, or—on a desktop browser—use a third-party extension such as Substital to overlay a matching SRT file while you watch. The overlay is not added to your Netflix account, downloads, or other devices.
Check Netflix’s subtitle options first
If Netflix already has the language or caption track you need, use its built-in controls. Start the movie or episode, open Audio & Subtitles, then select an available language. On a TV or streaming device, you may need to press an arrow on the remote to reveal playback controls. Available languages vary by title, region, device, and other circumstances; downloads may show only the two most relevant languages. Netflix also identifies SDH captions for deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers when available, though they may not be offered for every episode or season. See Netflix’s language and subtitle help page.
To change how Netflix’s own subtitles look, open your Netflix Account, go to Profiles, choose a profile, select Subtitle appearance, adjust the available options, and save. These controls change appearance—such as font, size, shadow, or background—not the words or language track. Some devices and language configurations may not display every appearance option. Add an external SRT file with Substital
For a custom translation, corrected captions, or another subtitle track, the practical workaround is a browser extension that draws text over the video. Substital’s vendor materials describe support for Netflix, subtitle uploads, and synchronization controls. It is a third-party overlay, not a Netflix feature; compatibility can change when Netflix updates its player.

What you need
- A desktop or laptop browser with Substital installed.
- A Netflix title playing in that same browser.
- A subtitle file that matches the exact movie or episode. Substital’s Chrome listing specifies
.srtfiles and ZIP archives containing an SRT; do not assume other formats are supported. - Permission to use the subtitle file.
Steps
- Install Substital from the browser’s official extension marketplace or the vendor’s site. Pin it to the browser toolbar if you want easier access. Check the current marketplace listing for supported browsers and compatibility.
- Open Netflix in that browser, sign in, and start the movie or episode. Let playback begin; the extension needs to detect the video player.
- Open Substital from the browser’s Extensions menu and select the detected Netflix video or player.
- Upload the file using the extension’s upload control, or drag and drop it if that option is available. Select the SRT file, or a ZIP containing it.
- Check the picture and turn off Netflix’s built-in subtitle track if you see two sets of captions.
- Adjust the overlay in Substital’s settings if needed, including the available text size, color, or background options.
- Correct timing if the text appears early or late. Use Substital’s synchronization slider for small adjustments, or enter a larger offset if the controls allow it. Replay a short section to check.
Substital’s instructions are at Getting started, and its FAQ describes platform limitations and synchronization. The extension’s controls and marketplace details may change over time.
Search for a subtitle instead of uploading one
Substital also describes a search workflow: select the detected Netflix player, enter a title, choose a language, search, then load a matching result. Results come from external subtitle providers, not Netflix. Check the season, episode, language, and release carefully—an identically named result may be timed for a different cut or version.
If you need captions with sound descriptions, look for an SDH or hearing-impaired version where the extension or source offers one. A file’s label is not a guarantee of accuracy or completeness.
Why a subtitle can be out of sync
A global offset can move every caption earlier or later by the same amount. It cannot fix timing that gradually drifts as an episode continues. Progressive drift usually points to a file made for a different frame rate, runtime, or edit. The Netflix version may also have a different recap, opening, or credits sequence.

Try these fixes in order:
- Confirm the file is for the same season and episode—not just the same show.
- Find a subtitle timed for the same release or runtime as the Netflix version.
- Use the extension’s offset adjustment for a consistent early/late shift.
- If timing increasingly diverges, try another file or retime it with a subtitle editor; an offset alone will not repair progressive drift.
A simple SRT entry looks like this, though valid formatting by itself does not guarantee compatibility:

Substital’s FAQ also says its custom subtitles work at normal playback speed, not automatically at faster speeds. Return Netflix to normal speed if the overlay stops matching. Full-screen behavior can vary; if captions disappear, test windowed playback and the browser’s full-screen mode.

If the extension or file does not work
- Netflix is not detected: Start playback, refresh the Netflix tab, reopen the extension, and select the detected player. If it still fails, check that the extension is enabled for the site and that your browser is currently supported. Temporarily disabling other subtitle or video-control extensions can help identify a conflict.
- The upload control is missing: Make sure playback has started and select the Netflix player in the extension first. The wrong tab, disabled site access, or a player change can prevent detection.
- The file will not load: Confirm it is an SRT or a ZIP containing an SRT, and that the archive is not nested or damaged. If possible, try a known-good file.
- Text is unreadable or characters are wrong: The file’s encoding or the selected font may not suit its script. Special characters and right-to-left text can depend on the file and browser configuration.
- Captions vanish after an episode change: Reopen the extension, select the newly detected player, and load the subtitle file for that episode. Do not expect one file to fit every episode.
- It stopped after a Netflix update: Extensions depend on how the browser can detect and overlay the player. Refresh the page, check for extension updates, and consult the current listing or vendor help; the method is not guaranteed to keep working through player changes.
Choose a different option for a different need
For two-language learning: Language Reactor is designed around dual subtitles, word lookup, and language-learning controls for Netflix and YouTube. Its official listing describes those features, but the available documentation does not establish it as a general-purpose tool for uploading any SRT file. See its Chrome listing and help page.
For a TV app or offline file: Netflix’s built-in tracks are the most compatible option on supported devices. If you legally possess a separate video file and need full control of subtitle formats and timing, a local media player may be more suitable—but it does not add subtitles to Netflix streams or downloads.

Use subtitle extensions and files carefully
Extensions can request access to data on websites you visit, so review the publisher, permissions, privacy information, and current maintenance status before installing one. Use subtitle files you created or are authorized to use; translations may be copyrighted, and third-party providers have their own terms. Avoid tools that promise to download or extract protected Netflix video as part of adding captions. The external overlay is only text displayed during browser playback; it does not alter Netflix’s stream.
