To add commands such as !socials or !rules to a YouTube Live chat, connect a chatbot that supports YouTube, create a custom command in its dashboard, and activate it. In StreamElements, the bot must be added as a channel moderator and can join only when your stream is public and live.
How YouTube Live chat commands work
A chatbot watches the live chat for a trigger—usually a command beginning with an exclamation mark—and posts the response you configured. StreamElements’ documentation identifies its chatbot as supporting YouTube Live and custom commands (StreamElements chatbot overview). The command is managed by the bot; it is not a built-in YouTube Studio response rule.
Set up StreamElements for YouTube Live
Make the bot a moderator
- Start a public YouTube livestream. StreamElements says the bot cannot join a private or unlisted stream, and the channel must be live for it to join.
- In YouTube Studio, open Settings > Community and add StreamElements as a moderator, following the channel-URL instructions in its setup guide.
- After the bot has been granted moderator access, keep the public stream live while you finish setup and test the command. An offline, private, or unlisted stream will not let the bot join under the documented setup requirements.
See StreamElements’ YouTube bot setup guide. YouTube Studio labels may change; if the path differs in your account, use the current Community settings to manage moderators.
Create and activate a command
- Open the StreamElements bot command dashboard and select Custom commands.
- Choose Add new command, enter the command name (for example,
!socials), and enter its response. - Select a response type if appropriate. StreamElements documents Say, Mention, Reply, and Whisper.
- Set any useful advanced options, such as aliases, cooldowns, loyalty-point cost, or conditions. These are optional controls, not requirements for every command.
- Choose Activate command to save it.
- With the bot present in the public live chat, enter the trigger as a viewer and check that the expected response appears. If it does not, check the command name and activation state first.
For the dashboard flow and options, consult StreamElements’ custom-command guide.

Manage commands from chat (optional)
StreamElements also documents moderator-access command management in chat using !command or !cmd. Its add syntax is !command add !<command_name> <response_text>; the reference also covers removing and editing commands, checking aliases, and configuring commands. Use the dashboard if you prefer its guided form, and see the StreamElements command reference for the chat syntax and supported management actions.
Choose command permissions and cooldowns
Keep commands useful to viewers while preventing repeated or unintended posts. A public information command—such as one pointing to your documentary schedule—may be available to everyone, while commands that alter bot behavior should be restricted to trusted users. Set a cooldown when a response would clutter chat if triggered repeatedly. StreamElements documents cooldowns and other advanced command settings, as well as moderator access for chat-side management.

Nightbot as an alternative
Nightbot is another option for YouTube Live chat. Its official setup page says it joins YouTube only when the channel is live and the stream is public, attributing that constraint to YouTube API rate limits. See Nightbot’s setup documentation. The available setup guidance establishes this joining requirement, but does not provide a basis here for comparing Nightbot’s command-creation controls with StreamElements’ dashboard workflow.
Troubleshoot commands that do not work
The bot does not appear in chat
- Confirm the stream is public and live; StreamElements says it cannot join a private or unlisted stream and requires the channel to be live.
- Check YouTube Studio’s Community settings to confirm StreamElements was added as a moderator.
- For Nightbot, check the same public-and-live conditions described in its setup documentation.
The bot joins, but the command gets no response
- Confirm the command is activated in the StreamElements dashboard.
- Check that the trigger viewers are typing matches the command name and any aliases you configured.
- Review any cooldown, access setting, loyalty-point cost, or condition that could prevent the command from running.
- Test in the public live chat after the bot has joined, rather than treating an offline or private-stream test as proof that the command is broken.
Or let it run in the cloud
Chat commands are separate from keeping a pre-recorded YouTube stream running. If your channel also needs an uploaded video or playlist to loop continuously, StreamNeo runs that stream from the cloud: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded video streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
