How to Fix Game Crashes and FPS Drops in Streamlabs Desktop

Separate game FPS loss from Streamlabs crashes, encoder or network frame drops, and capture-source failures, then troubleshoot each with reversible steps.

First identify what is failing: the game may be losing FPS, Streamlabs Desktop may be skipping or lagging frames, the network may be dropping frames, Streamlabs itself may be crashing, or the game may simply not be appearing in the capture. Those problems have different causes. Start by disabling overlays and reducing game load, then follow the branch that matches the symptom before changing drivers or seeking support.

Identify the symptom before changing settings

Watch what happens in the game and in Streamlabs Desktop. A game that closes or freezes is different from a stream preview that turns black, and both differ from an encoder or network warning. Streamlabs groups performance problems into lagged frames, skipped frames, and network-related dropped frames; its troubleshooting guidance treats application crashes and Game Capture failures separately.

What you see Likely area to investigate Start here
The game itself stutters or its FPS falls while Streamlabs is open GPU workload, overlays, or limited system headroom Disable overlays, cap the game’s FPS, or lower its graphics settings.
Streamlabs reports lagged frames Rendering or GPU pressure Reduce game quality or limit frame output to leave room to compose frames.
Streamlabs reports skipped frames CPU or encoder load Check CPU usage; if using x264, try a faster preset or supported hardware encoding.
Streamlabs reports dropped frames, or the stream disconnects Network connection Troubleshoot the network rather than assuming the GPU is at fault.
Streamlabs Desktop closes unexpectedly Application, driver, Windows, or runtime issue Enable crash reporting and follow the crash-diagnostics steps below.
Game is running but preview is black or missing Game Capture source configuration or game compatibility Follow the capture-source branch below; this does not by itself prove a game crash.

For further definitions and remedies, see Streamlabs’ guide to dropped frames and CPU/GPU issues.

Fix game FPS loss or instability first

1. Disable third-party overlays and retest

Turn off overlays from GeForce Experience, Discord, Steam, Ubisoft Connect, and Origin, then relaunch the game and Streamlabs and check whether the problem changes. Multiple overlays can compete for resources or interfere with a game. Disable one at a time where practical so you can identify which change matters, rather than changing several settings and losing track of the cause.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Streamlabs also mentions Windows 10 Game DVR and Game Bar in its game-crash and FPS-drop guidance. Those instructions are specifically about Windows 10; do not assume the same interface or steps apply to every Windows version.

2. Reduce the game’s GPU workload

Test one change at a time: enable V-Sync, use G-Sync or FreeSync if supported by your display and setup, set an in-game FPS cap, or lower graphics settings. These measures can reduce GPU pressure and give the system more room to render and compose the stream, but they are diagnostic workload-reduction steps—not guaranteed fixes. If the game is stable at a lower frame cap or quality setting, that points toward workload or available headroom rather than proving a particular component is defective.

3. Match the fix to Streamlabs’ frame warning

  • Lagged frames: reduce game quality or limit FPS/V-Sync so the system has room to compose frames.
  • Skipped frames: check CPU use. If encoding with x264, a faster preset may reduce CPU work; supported hardware encoding is another option.
  • Dropped frames or disconnections: investigate the network path and connection. A network drop is not, by itself, evidence of a GPU problem.

These categories are described in Streamlabs’ performance and stream-quality guide. Do not buy a GPU, capture card, or other hardware as a first response without evidence that a specific hardware bottleneck is responsible.

If Streamlabs Desktop itself crashes

Enable crash reporting and preserve the diagnostics

  1. In Streamlabs Desktop, open Settings > Get Support.
  2. Enable Enable reporting additional information on a crash.
  3. Restart Streamlabs Desktop and use it until the next crash.
  4. After the crash, retain the resulting debug information and filename so you can share it with Streamlabs support.

The crash guide, last updated April 25, 2025, also recommends checking Windows updates and GPU drivers, installing both the x64 and x32 Microsoft Visual C++ 2022 redistributables, and trying an administrator launch. Check the current Streamlabs interface and Microsoft’s current distribution instructions before following version-specific installation steps. If crashes continue, contact Streamlabs support with the diagnostics rather than guessing at a hardware replacement.

If the game runs but Game Capture is black or missing

A black preview or missing source is a capture failure, not necessarily a crash or an FPS problem. Streamlabs notes that some games may not support Game Capture. Try the following source-specific checks:

  1. Delete the Game Capture source and create it again.
  2. Close Streamlabs Desktop, then relaunch it as administrator and retest.
  3. In the source’s capture options, try Capture Specific Window or foreground-window capture, as appropriate.
  4. Toggle the anti-cheat hook option and test again.
  5. Disable external overlays, then retest.
  6. Update graphics drivers and try borderless fullscreen; if needed, try window capture instead.

Use the steps in Streamlabs’ Black Screen Game Capture Problems guide as the source of current capture-specific advice. Changing capture mode is not a remedy for a game that actually crashes; keep those symptoms separate.

When a capture card is involved

Only follow this branch if your setup uses a capture card and its source is stuttering or unavailable. Check whether another application is using the device and review the device-specific source settings. Streamlabs covers these issues in its capture-card troubleshooting guide. Capture-card advice does not establish that buying one will fix ordinary game crashes or FPS loss.

A practical retest sequence

  1. Record the exact symptom: game FPS loss, game crash, lagged frames, skipped frames, network drops, Streamlabs crash, or missing capture.
  2. Disable overlays and retest before changing unrelated settings.
  3. If performance remains poor, cap game FPS or lower graphics quality; observe whether game and stream performance change.
  4. For encoder warnings, inspect the relevant CPU/encoder or network path rather than applying a GPU-only fix.
  5. For an application crash, enable reporting and preserve debug details; for a capture failure, recreate and reconfigure the source.
  6. After each change, repeat the same game and stream scenario. If several settings change together, it becomes harder to identify the cause.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a prerecorded video live on YouTube, StreamNeo is a separate option from troubleshooting a game-streaming setup: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo and start the free first day.
