You add chapters to a YouTube music stream’s replay—not reliably to the live broadcast itself—by editing the archived video’s description in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s chapter rules are: start at 00:00, list at least three timestamps in ascending order, and make each chapter at least 10 seconds long. First make sure a replay exists: YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all.
How to add timestamps to a YouTube livestream replay
Use this process if YouTube has created an archived video for your stream. YouTube Help documents manual chapters for videos: add timestamp-and-title lines to the description and save. It does not guarantee that chapters will appear on every 24/7 stream archive, so check the saved video afterward.
- Open YouTube Studio and select Content.
- Find and open the archived stream video, if one is available.
- In the description, add one timestamp and a descriptive title for each section. Put the earliest timestamp first and begin with
00:00. For example:00:00 Opening set01:23 Ambient section1:02:15 Late-night mix - Check that you have at least three timestamps in ascending order and that every chapter lasts at least 10 seconds. A chapter’s duration is the time from its timestamp to the next timestamp.
- Save the description, then open the video and check both its description and player to see whether YouTube displays the chapters.
The example labels are illustrative; choose titles that accurately describe the music or program at each point. YouTube says Advanced features access may be needed to add chapters. Automatic chapters are another option, but YouTube does not make them available for every video.
Can you add song timestamps to a 24/7 music stream?
You can add timestamp-and-title lines to an available replay’s description, but YouTube’s documented chapter workflow is for videos. The cited guidance does not promise chapters during live playback or consistent chapter rendering for every replay generated from a continuous 24/7 stream. Treat the description as a way to organize a saved video, not as a guaranteed live track list.

If exact song navigation matters, keep a record of when tracks begin and use that timing when you edit the replay description. When the playlist or schedule changes, update the timestamps to match the actual recording; stale markers can send listeners to the wrong segment.
Plan for the archive before starting a continuous broadcast
Archiving is the key limitation for a 24/7 stream. YouTube Help says it can automatically archive a live stream that is less than 12 hours, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. That means a single uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast is not a dependable way to produce a complete replay for chapters.

- If you need a replay: plan a local recording or divide the broadcast into shorter sessions or segments, then check that YouTube created the expected replay before preparing chapters.
- If you want one continuous live channel: decide whether a complete replay is essential. YouTube’s archive guidance does not establish that a long continuous broadcast will yield a chapterable full-length video.
- If you need viewer navigation while live: consider the DVR controls, but do not mistake them for saved-video chapters.
Shorter sessions can create more manageable replays, but the best division depends on your programming schedule and audience. YouTube’s guidance supports the archive-duration constraint; it does not prescribe a particular session schedule.
