After your YouTube livestream replay is available as a video on your channel, add chapters by editing the replay’s description in YouTube Studio. Start the list at 00:00, include at least three timestamps in ascending order, and make each chapter at least 10 seconds long. YouTube documents these rules for videos generally; applying them to a livestream replay follows from YouTube’s description of replays as channel videos.

Where to add timestamps on a livestream replay

Add chapter timestamps to the replay video’s description—not to the live chat or stream markers. YouTube says a channel may post a replay after a livestream ends, and replays appear as videos on the channel. Its chapter instructions describe the video-description workflow, rather than a separate procedure specifically for livestream replays. YouTube Help: Learn about live streams · YouTube Help: Video Chapters

Add chapters to the replay in YouTube Studio

  1. Wait for the replay. After the livestream ends, confirm that its replay is available on your channel as a video.
  2. Open the replay’s details. In YouTube Studio, select Content, then select the replay video to edit its details. YouTube Help: Upload YouTube videos – Computer
  3. Edit the description. Add each chapter as a timestamp followed by a short title. Keep the timestamp list in ascending order and begin it with 00:00.
  4. Check the chapter rules. Include at least three timestamps, with every chapter lasting at least 10 seconds. The timestamp’s interval to the next entry determines the chapter length.
  5. Save and verify. Save the video details, then open the replay’s watch page. Check that chapters are visible in the description and that the player’s progress bar is divided into chapter sections. YouTube describes viewer navigation through chapter divisions in the description and player. YouTube Help: Use chapters, mentioned people and places, & seeking features – Computer

Format the chapter list

Use one timestamp and title per line. The titles below are illustrative; set boundaries and labels according to what actually happens in your recording.

00:00 Introduction
02:15 Guest background
08:40 Main discussion

The example starts at zero, has three entries, and leaves more than 10 seconds between each timestamp. YouTube’s video-upload help page lists a 5,000-character description limit, so keep the full description—including any existing text and chapter list—within that limit. • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Manual chapters and automatic chapters

Manual timestamps let you choose the replay’s chapter boundaries and labels. YouTube says manually entered chapters override automatic chapters. Automatic chapters are not available on every video; YouTube notes that active channel strikes or content that may be inappropriate to some viewers can make chapters unavailable. YouTube Help: Video Chapters

If chapters do not appear

  • Check the first entry: the list must start at 00:00.
  • Check the count and order: include at least three timestamp entries, arranged from earliest to latest.
  • Check each interval: every chapter must be at least 10 seconds long.
  • Save the description: after correcting the list, save the replay’s details and reload its watch page.
  • Consider eligibility: automatic chapters may be unavailable for some videos. Manual timestamps override automatic chapters, but YouTube’s eligibility notes still matter if chapters do not appear.

The first four checks follow the published chapter requirements; the sequence is a practical way to diagnose a missing chapter list, not a separate official troubleshooting procedure. YouTube Help: Video Chapters

Do not confuse stream markers with chapters

YouTube’s stream markers help creators reference moments when creating highlights from a livestream. The marker guidance does not describe them as a way to create description chapters. For chapters on the replay, use the video-description method above. YouTube Help: Create a highlight
