To keep background music audible in both a YouTube gaming livestream and its archived replay, choose a track licensed for those uses, add it as a separate source in OBS, balance it with game audio and voice, and include it in the main stream mix. Test a short stream and check its replay before relying on the setup. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, and an archived video may receive a Content ID claim after the stream ends.
Choose music that is cleared for the live stream and replay
The simplest platform-focused choice is music from YouTube Studio’s Audio Library. YouTube says tracks and sound effects downloaded from the library are copyright-safe on YouTube and will not be claimed through Content ID. Check the individual track’s license: when it requires Creative Commons attribution, copy the credit shown in Studio into your video description. YouTube’s Audio Library guidance explains the library and attribution requirements.
For music from another provider or a purchase, read the written license rather than relying on a “free” label or a credit in the description. Confirm that it permits livestreaming and the resulting archived video, and check monetization, territory, duration, and attribution terms. YouTube warns that even music labeled “free” online may still be flagged by Content ID; a description credit does not establish permission. See YouTube’s tips for finding safe music.
Creator Music does not cover live streams
Creator Music tracks are governed by their displayed terms. As of October 3, 2026, YouTube’s FAQ describes Creator Music as available to U.S. creators in the YouTube Partner Program, with expansion outside the U.S. pending, and says it does not support licensing for live content. Do not assume a Creator Music video license covers a livestream or its replay; check current eligibility and the terms shown for the track in Studio. Read the Creator Music FAQ.

Check game music separately
Having a game soundtrack in the game does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast it. Check the publisher’s current policy and any in-game streamer or licensed-music settings. Permission varies by game; the general YouTube guidance does not determine whether a specific soundtrack is cleared.
Add and balance music in OBS
1. Add music as its own audio source
On Windows 10 version 2004 or later, and Windows 11, OBS Application Audio Capture can capture a music player separately. This makes it possible to adjust music independently from game audio and voice. OBS also documents capturing audio through a game or window source where supported. If the same player is also captured by the global Desktop Audio source, disable Desktop Audio or otherwise ensure the application is not captured twice. Duplicate capture can make the music louder than intended or create an echo.
2. Set levels and route the music into the stream mix
In OBS’s audio mixer, keep game audio and voice intelligible, then lower or raise the music source to fit the mix. There is no single correct music level: listen to the combined audio while speaking and during louder gameplay. Confirm that the music source is routed to the main stream audio mix, not only to a separate recording track.

For an ordinary replay played in a standard video player, the player typically plays one audio track at a time. OBS advises assigning all sources to track 1 when the recording will be published without editing; separate tracks are useful for post-production but a music-only extra track may not be heard in the final replay as expected. 3. Test a short stream and inspect the replay
- Start a short test stream and listen for game sound, voice, and music together. Check for missing audio, duplication, echo, or music that overwhelms speech.
- After the test ends and the archive is available, play the replay and confirm the music is present at a suitable level. If possible, check it on a separate device or playback system.
- Adjust the OBS source or routing and repeat the test if the live mix and replay do not match what you intended.
Understand claims and live interruptions
YouTube scans livestreams for third-party content and may interrupt or terminate a stream when it identifies such content. Archived live videos can also receive Content ID claims after the stream ends; a clean live broadcast is not proof that the replay will remain unclaimed. For third-party licensed music, YouTube says to ask the rights holder to allowlist your channel through Content ID. A license alone may not prevent a live interruption. If a replay is claimed, YouTube Studio may offer options to trim the claimed segment, replace the claimed music with Audio Library tracks, or mute the song or all audio in the claimed segment. Since June 2025, edits saved in Studio cannot be reverted. Preview any change carefully before saving, and keep an original local recording if you need an independent copy. - Music is missing from the replay: Check that the music source is in the main stream mix and, for an unedited recording, assigned to track 1. A source assigned only to another track may not play in an ordinary video player.
- Music is doubled or echoing: Check whether both Application Audio Capture and Desktop Audio are capturing the same player. Avoid capturing the application through both routes.
- Music masks voice or game sound: Lower the music source in the mixer and listen to the combined mix while speaking and during gameplay before going live again.
- A licensed track triggers a claim or live interruption: Verify that the license expressly covers livestreams and archived video, and contact the rights holder about allowlisting your channel. Do not assume a purchase, “free” label, or attribution prevents a claim.
- The game soundtrack causes concern: Check the game publisher’s current policy and audio settings; the game’s presence in your stream does not establish broadcast rights.
