In OBS Studio, add the still image as an Image source and your local audio files as a VLC Video source playlist. Turn on Loop Playlist to repeat the audio. The word “Video” in the source name is misleading: OBS’s VLC source can play audio files as well as video. This setup loops media; it does not keep your computer, internet connection, encoder, or broadcast online by itself.
What you need before you start
- OBS Studio installed.
- A still image and audio files stored on the computer running OBS. Use files you have the right to include in a livestream.
- VLC installed if you plan to use the VLC playlist source. OBS’s documentation says 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC for this source to be available.
- A configured livestream destination and stream key if you are ready to broadcast. Keep the key private.
The OBS documentation describes these sources and controls on a page dated January 11, 2022. It lists MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV among the audio formats supported by Media Source, and documents VLC Video as the playlist-capable option. Interface labels or behavior may differ in later OBS releases.
Add the still image to your scene
- Open OBS and select the scene you will use for the stream, or create a new scene in the Scenes panel.
- In the Sources panel, select + and choose Image.
- Name the source, select OK, then browse to the image file and confirm.
- Position and resize the image in the preview so it fills the canvas as intended. Check the preview for empty bars or edges before going live.
The cited OBS page does not specify image-source setup details, so the exact dialog labels may vary by version. Confirm that the image appears in the scene preview.
Add and loop an audio playlist
- Install VLC for your operating system if it is not already installed. If your OBS installation is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC.
- In the same scene, select + in Sources and choose VLC Video. If the source does not appear, check that VLC is installed and that its bitness matches OBS.
- Create the source and add the local audio files to its playlist using the source properties. Arrange them in the order you want them to play.
- Enable Loop Playlist. This restarts the source after it reaches the end of the playlist.
- Optionally enable Shuffle Playlist if you want randomized playback rather than a predictable sequence. The cited OBS guide describes shuffle as off by default.
- Confirm that the Image and VLC Video sources are both present in the scene. Play the source or make a short test recording to check that the image remains visible and audio is audible.
Despite its name, VLC Video supports playlists of media files, including audio. The OBS documentation lists Windows, macOS, and Linux for this source. Exact controls can change between OBS versions.

Choose the right source for one file or several
| What you want to play | OBS source | How repetition works | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| One long local audio file | Media Source | Enable its Loop setting to replay that file when it ends. | Simple for one file; the cited guide does not describe it as a multi-item playlist source. |
| Several local audio files in sequence | VLC Video | Enable Loop Playlist to restart after the final item. | Requires VLC to be installed and available to OBS. |
| Several files in randomized order | VLC Video | Enable Shuffle Playlist; enable Loop Playlist as well if playback should restart after the playlist ends. | Playback order is less predictable. |
Test the scene and understand what “24/7” requires
A looping source only repeats the media while OBS is running and able to send the stream. It does not guarantee continuous broadcasting: the computer, power, network, OBS, encoder, or streaming destination can still stop or disconnect. Test the image and audio together before starting a long broadcast, and monitor the setup if you are running OBS locally.
If you send the stream to YouTube using HLS ingestion, YouTube’s HLS setup guidance specifies 1–4 second segments, TS segment format, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and no byte-range support. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP. These are HLS ingest requirements, not settings for the local OBS audio playlist or a guarantee that a stream is eligible to run indefinitely. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion requirements before choosing that ingest method.

Use media you are allowed to livestream
A file playing correctly in OBS does not establish that you have permission to broadcast it. Check the rights for both the mantra recording and the still image, including any restrictions on livestreaming or public performance. The technical setup does not determine whether a particular recording or image is licensed for your use.
Troubleshoot common problems
- VLC Video is missing from the source menu: Install VLC. If you use 64-bit OBS, check that VLC is also 64-bit, as specified by OBS’s documentation.
- The playlist plays once and stops: Open the VLC Video source properties and enable Loop Playlist. Check that the intended files are actually in the playlist.
- Only one file repeats, but you expected a playlist: You may have added a Media Source. Use VLC Video for multiple items, or keep Media Source and enable Loop for a single file.
- The image is missing or does not fill the canvas: Check that the Image source points to the intended file, then adjust its position and size in the preview.
- The stream stops even though looping is enabled: Looping controls media playback, not OBS or connection uptime. Check whether OBS is still running and whether the computer, network, encoder, or destination disconnected.
- Audio is silent or the wrong item plays: Confirm the playlist contains the intended local files, test playback, and check OBS’s audio meters and output monitoring before broadcasting.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your destination is YouTube and you want the broadcast to continue without leaving a home computer on, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos or playlists from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the files as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams, not camera broadcasts. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free first day.
