To keep a still image live on YouTube, run a streaming encoder on a server and set the image as its continuous video input. The encoder turns that image into a live video signal and sends it to YouTube using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. YouTube does not receive a standalone image as a live broadcast; the exact image-input setup depends on the encoder you choose.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time enablement can take up to 24 hours.
- A server that can run your chosen streaming encoder and maintain a reliable outbound internet connection.
- A still image file and, if your broadcast needs sound, an audio source. A static picture alone does not supply audio.
- The stream URL and stream key for the broadcast, obtained in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
YouTube’s official encoder guidance describes how to connect an encoder and the stream characteristics it accepts, but it does not prescribe a static-image command for a particular server or encoder. Use the documentation for your chosen encoder for its precise image-input syntax.
Set up the YouTube broadcast and get its credentials
- Enable live streaming if needed. Complete channel verification and enable the feature in YouTube. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream, then copy the stream URL and stream key shown for it. YouTube explains the encoder connection flow at Set up your encoder for live streaming.
- Keep the key private. Treat it like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a stream to your broadcast. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
Configure the image encoder on the server
- Choose an encoder that can use a still image continuously. Configure the image as the encoder’s video source or scene, rather than expecting YouTube to display an uploaded picture by itself. Check that the encoder can keep producing frames for the entire planned broadcast.
- Set the destination. Enter the stream URL and key from Live Control Room in the encoder’s output settings. Choose RTMPS if the encoder supports it; YouTube recommends the secure protocol and explains that it protects RTMP with TLS/SSL in its RTMPS guidance.
- Choose a supported stream profile. YouTube currently lists H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate encoding. Confirm your encoder supports the combination you select. For a static image, high frame rates or resolution beyond what the image and program need may consume bandwidth without adding useful detail.
- Set keyframes and bitrate. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Select a bitrate appropriate to the chosen resolution and codec, then ensure your server’s sustained upload capacity can carry it.
- Decide whether to include audio. If the stream should be silent, verify how the encoder handles audio output when no audio source is configured. If adding audio, use a supported AAC or MP3 stream and confirm the rights for that material.
For current accepted formats and encoding details, consult YouTube’s live encoder settings. Settings available in the encoder can differ, so the final profile must be supported by both the encoder and YouTube’s ingest.
Test the stream and keep it healthy
- Start the encoder before relying on the broadcast. For a 24/7 channel, run a test period first rather than waiting for an important stream to discover configuration or connectivity problems.
- Check the preview and stream health in Live Control Room. Confirm the image is visible, any intended audio is present, and the connection remains stable.
- Monitor the encoder process, server load, and outbound network. YouTube advises using a reliable connection, previewing and monitoring the stream, and leaving upload headroom. Its guidance recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the stream bitrate; see YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Plan how the server process will be supervised and restarted if it exits. Encoder restart behavior and process supervision are server- and software-specific; verify them with your server and encoder documentation.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No incoming signal in Live Control Room | Encoder is stopped, or the URL or stream key is incorrect. | Confirm the process is running and copy the current URL and key from the correct Live Control Room stream. |
| Connection or SSL error | RTMPS configuration, port access, or network restrictions are preventing the encoder from connecting. | Verify the RTMPS URL and encoder settings. YouTube notes that port 443 may resolve some SSL connection errors if the encoder allows port configuration; see its RTMPS help. |
| Stream health is poor or the output drops | Available upload bandwidth is insufficient or unstable for the selected bitrate, or the server/network is unreliable. | Lower the bitrate or resolution, verify sustained upload capacity with headroom, and monitor the server and network. |
| Image does not appear or changes unexpectedly | The encoder is not using the still image as a continuous video source, or the image path/source is unavailable. | Check the encoder’s source configuration and confirm the image remains accessible to the process running on the server. |
| Image is visible but the stream is silent | No audio source is configured, or the encoder is not outputting the selected audio format. | Decide whether silence is intended; otherwise configure a supported audio source and verify its output in preview. |
Will YouTube archive an entire 24/7 stream?
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its encoder guidance does not promise automatic archiving for a broadcast that runs continuously beyond 12 hours, so do not assume a single 24/7 stream will produce a complete archive. If an archive matters, plan a recording or other preservation workflow separately and verify its operation.

Or let it run in the cloud
If maintaining an encoder and server is more work than you want, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for looping uploaded videos as a 24/7 live stream. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo keeps it running from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the files as uploaded, at any quality up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
