To add a scoreboard to a sports live stream, create a sport-specific scoreboard, copy its public display URL, and add it to your production software as a browser source. In OBS Studio, use a Browser source; in vMix, use Add Input > Web Browser. Match the source dimensions to your production canvas, place it above the game video, and test score updates before going live. A separate phone, tablet, or computer can run the scorekeeper control panel while the production operator manages the stream.

How the scoreboard overlay works

The scoreboard service provides two distinct things: a control page for entering scores and other game information, and a display page that renders the graphic. The production software loads that display page and composites it over the camera or video. When a service provides separate links, use the public display or overlay URL in the production source—not the private control URL.

This URL-based approach works in OBS Studio and vMix, and may work in other production software that accepts a web page as an input. The exact fields and controls depend on the scoreboard service and sport; confirm those before building the show around them.

Add a scoreboard in OBS Studio

  1. Create and configure the board. In the scoreboard service, choose the sport and set up the teams, colors, layout, and sport-specific fields. Depending on the tool and sport, controls may include the score, clock, period, half, set or quarter, substitutions, player names, and sponsor graphics.
  2. Copy the display URL. Copy the public overlay or display link supplied by the service. Keep the control-panel link separate for the scorekeeper.
  3. Add a Browser source. In OBS, select the scene that will carry the game, click + in Sources, choose Browser, name the source, and paste the display URL.
  4. Set the source dimensions. Set the Browser source width and height to the OBS Base (Canvas) Resolution. For a canvas configured at 1920 × 1080 pixels, those are the dimensions to enter; if your canvas uses another resolution, use that instead.
  5. Place and size the graphic. Put the Browser source above the camera or video source in the Sources stack. Position it so the score is legible without obscuring important action, then lock the source to avoid moving it accidentally.
  6. Test score control. Open the scorekeeper control panel on a separate device or browser, change a score or clock value, and confirm the program preview updates. Check that the board shows the right fields for the sport.
  7. Rehearse the whole setup. Before match day, run a private or unlisted rehearsal. Verify that the source is visible, the control panel can reach the overlay, the network connection works, and the board is readable in the program output.

OBS source sizing and placement guidance is also covered in OBScoreboard’s OBS scoreboard overlay setup guide and ScoreLayer’s OBS setup instructions.

#1 Best Overall
Osee GoStream Omni 12 ISO Video Switcher, 12CH SDI HDMI Hardware Mixer
  • UNMATCHED 12CH INPUT FLEXIBILITY: Connect 8 cameras directly via HDMI (up to 4K60) or 3G-SDI (1080P60). 4 AUX channels support 4 NDI/SRT/RTMP IP (perfect for PTZ), 2 USB webcams, or 2 built-in MP4 players to play pre-recorded ads or run instant slow-motion replays without costly external devices.
  • ROCK-SOLID HARDWARE STABILITY: Say goodbye to monitoring CPU usage, lag, dropped frames, and crashes. Unlike software mixers that limit the features you can run at once, our hardware video switcher utilizes dedicated FPGA processing to handle every feature simultaneously under full load, ensuring absolute stability.
  • ISO REC & OUTPUT ROUTING: Record PGM & 8 ISO channels to SSD/CFexpress with zero dropped frames, and stream to 3 platforms. Route any of 12 inputs, PVW, PGM, MultiSource, or M/V to 4 assignable, ultra-low latency outputs (2 HDMI/2 SDI) for IMAG on LED walls, projectors, or confidence monitors.
  • BROADCAST GRAPHICS & BRANDING: Overlay transparent graphics (scoreboards, tickers) directly from your PC (vMix, ProPresenter) via HDMI with Alpha-channel support. Run custom Stinger transitions using built-in media players—no expensive external hardware required.
  • 5-LAYER MULTISOURCE & VIDEO EFFECTS: Build stunning TV-style layouts with our powerful MultiSource engine, featuring 4 customizable video windows and 1 still/motion background for talk shows, sports & webinars. Use 4 Upstream Keys for Chroma/PiP/LUMA, plus 2 DSKs for logos and lower thirds.

Add a scoreboard in vMix

  1. Create or open the scoreboard in its service and copy the public display URL.
  2. In vMix, choose Add Input, open Web Browser, paste the URL, and add the input.
  3. Activate the scoreboard input with a numbered overlay button so it appears over the program video.
  4. Open the input’s Position settings to zoom, move, or crop the graphic into place.
  5. Use a separate computer, phone, or tablet for the scorekeeper control panel if you want scorekeeping independent of production controls. Test that a score change reaches the on-air overlay.

Using another production tool

A URL-based overlay may be usable in software with a web-page or browser input. OBScoreboard lists OBS Studio, vMix, Streamlabs, Wirecast, YoloBox, Ecamm Live, and XSplit on its integration page. That is the provider’s compatibility information, not a guarantee for every software version or setup; check the current instructions from both the production-software maker and the scoreboard provider. Hardware switchers may use a different overlay workflow or link format than OBS.

Before the event: a scoreboard checklist

  • Sport and fields: Confirm the board supports the match’s scoring format and displays the necessary clock, period, set, or other fields.
  • Link: Use the public display URL in the production input and keep the control link for the scorekeeper.
  • Composition: Match source dimensions to the actual canvas, place the board above the game video, and check its position in the program output.
  • Operation: Decide who enters scores and who operates cameras and production. A second device can keep those tasks separate.
  • Rehearsal: Test visibility, score changes, network access, and the full scene or input workflow before the live event.

Troubleshoot common overlay problems

The scoreboard does not appear

Check that the source is enabled and above the video layer, then verify that you pasted the display URL rather than a control link. Confirm the production computer has network access to the overlay page.

The graphic is cropped, blurry, or the wrong size

Set the browser input’s width and height to the actual production canvas resolution. Reset unintended transforms before resizing or repositioning the source, then inspect the output at its intended resolution.

The score does not update

Confirm the scorekeeper is changing values in the correct control panel and that the production source points to the corresponding display page. Once those are checked, reload or refresh the source if needed.

The background is black or transparency looks wrong

Check the overlay provider’s transparency instructions and the production software’s input settings. Do not assume a hardware switcher handles browser transparency in the same way as OBS.

The clock resets after changing scenes

Some web sources reload when hidden. Check whether the source is set to shut down or reload when not visible, and whether the scoreboard service restores or resynchronizes its state after a reload.

vMix loads slowly or fails to load the page

Check internet connectivity and firewall access. KeepTheScore’s vMix guide recommends wired Ethernet, closing unnecessary browser tabs, and checking graphics and browser settings as practical checks; these are troubleshooting suggestions, not guaranteed fixes.

Or let it run in the cloud

The scoreboard overlay belongs in your production software; StreamNeo is a separate option for keeping uploaded video looping as a 24/7 YouTube live stream. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo runs the stream in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It plays the uploaded video, not a live camera feed.

  • Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card; one free day per account.
