How to Add a 4K 60fps Video Playlist to OBS for YouTube Live

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To play a sequence of local videos through OBS on YouTube Live, add them to an OBS VLC Video source, then separately set OBS’s output to 3840×2160 at 60 fps and configure the encoder for YouTube’s recommended bitrate and keyframes. The source playlist controls what plays; it does not set the stream’s resolution or frame rate. A 4K/60 stream also depends on your computer’s ability to render and encode it and your connection’s ability to upload it steadily.

What you need before setting up the playlist

  • OBS Studio, with a scene ready for the stream.
  • VLC Media Player. OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC being installed. Match the architecture: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
  • Your video files stored locally and ready to add to the playlist.
  • A YouTube live stream configured for your channel, plus its stream key. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it could send a stream to your channel.
  • A computer and upload connection capable of sustaining the selected output. YouTube’s bitrate figures are recommendations, not a guarantee that your setup can deliver them reliably.

Add the videos as an OBS playlist

  1. Install VLC, then restart OBS if it was open. If VLC Video is missing from the source menu, confirm VLC is installed and that its 32-bit or 64-bit architecture matches OBS.
  2. Select the scene where you want the videos to appear. In the Sources dock, click + and choose VLC Video. OBS’s Sources Guide describes VLC Video as the playlist-capable source.
  3. Add and order your media files using the playlist controls in the VLC Video source properties. Arrange them in the sequence you want viewers to see.
  4. Set playback behavior. Leave Shuffle Playlist off for the listed order. Loop Playlist is on by default; turn it off if playback should end after the last item. Check the source’s visibility behavior too: the documented default is to stop when hidden and restart when visible, which matters if you switch scenes.
  5. Place the source in the scene. Select it, then use OBS’s transform controls. Fit to Screen is Ctrl-F on Windows or Cmd-F on macOS; use transform editing for precise placement. Fitting the image changes its size on the canvas, not the stream’s output resolution.

VLC Video or Media Source?

OBS source Best suited to Important difference
VLC Video A sequence of files managed as a playlist Requires VLC installed with architecture matching OBS; provides playlist controls such as shuffle and loop.
Media Source Playback of an individual file Useful for a single video rather than the playlist workflow. OBS documents an option to show nothing when playback ends.

Use VLC Video when the sequence itself is the program. Use separate Media Sources when you need individual files as separate scene elements rather than one playlist.

Set OBS output to 4K at 60 fps

  1. Open Settings in OBS and select Video.
  2. Set the Output (Scaled) Resolution to 3840Ă—2160 and the Common FPS Value to 60. The files being 4K/60 does not automatically make the outgoing stream 4K/60.
  3. Choose an encoder and bitrate in Settings > Output (set Output Mode to Advanced if needed to expose the relevant streaming controls). Match the codec to YouTube’s recommendations below, and use CBR with a two-second keyframe interval.
  4. Check the stream resolution, frame rate, encoder, and bitrate again before going live. If OBS cannot render or encode consistently, reduce output resolution or frame rate until the stream is stable.

4K/60 is substantially more demanding than a lower-resolution or 30-fps output. OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guidance advises lowering the output resolution or frame rate when performance is insufficient; it specifically suggests dropping from 60 fps to 30 if 60 fps is not working.

Use YouTube’s current live encoder recommendations

YouTube’s live encoder settings page lists the following recommended bitrate for 2160p (4K) at 60 fps. The page retrieved on October 3, 2026 did not state a publication date; check it again before a future broadcast because platform recommendations can change.

Video codec YouTube-recommended bitrate at 2160p/60 Other relevant setting
H.264 50 Mbps CBR; two-second keyframe frequency recommended, no more than four seconds
AV1 or H.265/HEVC 35 Mbps CBR; two-second keyframe frequency recommended, no more than four seconds

These are YouTube’s platform recommendations, not measurements of your connection or a promise that your computer can sustain the output. Allow upload headroom rather than treating the recommended video bitrate as the entire connection requirement; audio and other network activity also use bandwidth. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, up to 60 fps. Choose only an encoder option your OBS installation and hardware support.

Connect OBS to YouTube and run a preflight

  1. Copy the stream key from YouTube Live Control Room and enter it in OBS under Settings > Stream, using the YouTube service/server option presented in your OBS version. Do not publish or share the key.
  2. Test the full playlist before the event. Confirm the files play in order, the picture fills the intended area, transitions or scene changes behave as expected, and audio is present and balanced.
  3. Start a private or unlisted test stream if appropriate and inspect YouTube’s stream health and any warnings while OBS is sending. A short local preview alone will not reveal upload instability or YouTube ingest problems.
  4. Monitor the stream after going live. Keep an eye on OBS rendering/encoding performance and YouTube’s health messages. YouTube notes that 4K streams use normal latency; the low-latency option is not offered for 4K.

YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the real program before starting a live stream. That is particularly useful for a playlist: check loudness and picture behavior across more than the first file, including the transitions between items.

Troubleshoot common playlist and stream problems

What you see Likely cause What to check or change
VLC Video does not appear in the source list VLC is not installed, or its architecture does not match OBS. Install the matching VLC version—64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS—then reopen OBS and check the source menu.
The playlist plays in a different order each time Shuffle is enabled. Open the VLC Video source properties and turn off Shuffle Playlist.
The sequence starts over after the last file Loop Playlist is enabled, which is the documented default. Turn off looping if the stream should stop at the end. If you are using Media Source for a single file, check its end-of-playback behavior.
Playback stops or restarts after a scene switch The VLC source’s visibility behavior stops playback while the source is hidden and restarts it when visible. Review the source’s visibility behavior and test the exact scene-switch sequence you plan to use.
The stream is not actually 4K or 60 fps The OBS output mode is separate from the source files; OBS may also be configured to scale or use a lower frame rate. Check Settings > Video for 3840×2160 output and 60 FPS, and verify the settings shown in YouTube’s live dashboard.
Stuttering, dropped frames, or unstable stream health Rendering load, encoder load, or upload capacity may be insufficient; the playlist is not necessarily the bottleneck. Check OBS performance and YouTube health messages. Reduce output resolution or frame rate, or select an encoder and bitrate your system and connection can sustain; test again before the event.
Picture works but audio is missing or wrong The source’s audio behavior or the OBS audio mix may not match the files. Play every playlist item during the preflight and check OBS’s audio meters and monitoring/output configuration.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a YouTube channel to keep playing uploaded videos without leaving OBS and a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It runs the loop from the cloud; it does not go live from a camera.
