How Three Filmmakers Used Sora to Create Its First Stunning Videos

Shy Kids, Paul Trillo, and Don Allen Stevenson III used early Sora access to test character continuity, visual style, and fictional world-building. Their films showed the promise of AI video—but also the editing, selection, VFX, sound, and judgment still supplied by human filmmakers.

The short answer: Shy Kids, Paul Trillo, and Don Allen Stevenson III used the first public filmmaker access to OpenAI’s Sora in three different ways. Shy Kids tested whether a character could remain consistent across shots; Trillo used prompting to search for a distinctive film aesthetic; and Stevenson used iteration to invent an entire fictional natural world. Their films looked like a leap beyond Sora’s early demonstration clips—but they were not made by pressing a button and accepting the result.

The filmmakers generated, selected, edited, repaired, narrated, and scored the material. In Air Head especially, later production reporting revealed extensive manual cleanup. These were early examples of AI-assisted filmmaking under close human direction, not autonomous films.

Update: this is a historical account

This article concerns the original Sora research-preview period in March 2024. OpenAI later released Sora as a standalone product and announced Sora 2, but OpenAI’s current notices say that the Sora web and app experiences ended on April 26, 2026. OpenAI says the Sora API is scheduled to end on September 24, 2026. The workflow described below should therefore be read as a record of an important early experiment—not as instructions for buying or using the current Sora product.

Why these three videos seemed like a breakthrough

When OpenAI introduced Sora, most of the public examples were carefully selected demonstrations: visually striking clips designed to show what text-to-video generation might produce. About six weeks later, MIT Technology Review reported that a small group of filmmakers had been given access to the model before broad public availability.

The resulting shorts were significant because they asked more demanding creative questions than a single impressive prompt:

  • Can one generated character remain recognizable across several shots?
  • Can prompting produce a coherent visual language rather than merely a realistic image?
  • Can a model generate enough connected material to support a fictional documentary or story?

The three filmmakers pursued different answers. Shy Kids made Air Head, a surreal short about a man whose head is a balloon. Paul Trillo made Abstract, a deliberately unconventional sequence built around transformations, retro imagery, and a breakdancing “trash man.” Don Allen Stevenson III made Beyond Our Reality, a mock nature documentary populated by impossible animals.

Together, the shorts showed that early text-to-video generation could sometimes produce coherent movement, expressive images, and enough continuity to make filmmakers think in terms of scenes and sequences. They also exposed the amount of human judgment still required to turn promising generations into something watchable.

Air Head: a consistency test with a large amount of invisible labor

For Toronto-based pop band and filmmaking collective Shy Kids, the central experiment was character consistency. The group wanted to see whether Sora could create one recognizable person across multiple shots rather than generating unrelated images that merely shared a prompt.

The result, Air Head, follows a man with a balloon for a head. The premise gave the filmmakers a memorable visual anchor while also creating an unusually difficult continuity problem: the balloon had to remain plausibly attached to the character, behave consistently from shot to shot, and survive different camera positions and environments.

Walter Woodman of Shy Kids said the test was mostly successful. One train-car sequence included numerous passenger faces that Woodman said were generated entirely by Sora. That detail mattered because a crowded scene is a tougher continuity challenge than an isolated subject against a simple background. Every extra face creates another opportunity for an image model to produce distortions or unwanted changes.

But “mostly successful” did not mean flawless. MIT Technology Review noted continuing anatomy problems and unreliable text generation. In a separate Sora example discussed in the reporting, a bicycle-repair-shop sign contained misspellings. Those limitations are easy to overlook when watching a short sequence of selected clips, but they become important when footage is assembled into a finished narrative.

The final film was not raw Sora output

Shy Kids generated many clips and edited the usable material together. The group also wrote and recorded the narration and composed and performed the music. Sora supplied much of the visual source material, but the story, pacing, sound, and final presentation remained human-made.

Later production reporting based on an Fxguide interview with Patrick Cederberg disclosed an even more labor-intensive process. The team reportedly:

  • manually rotoscoped backgrounds;
  • removed unwanted faces that appeared on balloons;
  • color-corrected footage;
  • removed or altered recurring head artifacts;
  • corrected inconsistencies in balloon color; and
  • generated hundreds of clips, each roughly 10–20 seconds long, before selecting the final material.

The same later report described an approximate 300-to-1 generation-to-final-selection ratio. That figure should be attributed to the later reporting based on Cederberg’s interview, not treated as a statistic established by the original MIT Technology Review article.

This is the most important correction to the popular interpretation of Air Head. The finished short demonstrated what Sora could contribute to a human-led production pipeline. It did not demonstrate that Sora could independently produce a finished film with stable characters, clean visual effects, and professional continuity.

The filmmakers’ own creative lesson was similarly measured: the technology still depended on human direction and craft. Sora could provide surprising shots, but people had to decide which shots belonged together, repair what was broken, and give the piece a voice.

Abstract: using prompts to search for a visual language

Paul Trillo approached Sora from a different direction. Rather than trying primarily to make a conventional, polished-looking sequence, he wanted to explore the model’s visual range and find an aesthetic that felt more organic and cinematic.

Abstract includes retro imagery, a mirror-ball figure that transforms, and a breakdancing “trash man.” The images are less like a straightforward plot and more like a moving visual exploration. Trillo iterated on prompts until he found combinations that produced a rougher appearance resembling vintage 16mm film.

That process makes prompting function less like filling out a technical form and more like visual development. The prompt is not only describing a subject; it is searching for texture, camera behavior, movement, period feeling, and tone. A filmmaker can use successive generations to discover an aesthetic that was difficult to specify in advance.

Trillo described the footage in Abstract as being used as generated, without color correction or additional visual effects. He also said that even the initial jump-cut editing was generated through Sora. Those statements are Trillo’s account of his workflow and should not be read as independently verified testing of every frame.

The contrast with Air Head is revealing. Shy Kids treated Sora as a source of many shots within a conventional editing and visual-effects workflow. Trillo emphasized prompt experimentation and accepted a more intentionally rough, filmic result. Neither approach was simply “the AI made a film.” They represent different ways of assigning creative responsibility between a model and a filmmaker.

Beyond Our Reality: building a fictional natural history

Don Allen Stevenson III used Sora for imaginative world-building. A filmmaker and visual-effects artist who had previously participated in OpenAI’s DALL-E 2 artist testing, Stevenson created Beyond Our Reality as a fictional nature documentary in the style of a National Geographic-style wildlife film.

Its animals do not exist: the film includes creatures such as a “girafflamingo,” fox-crows, and cat-eels. The documentary format gives these inventions a familiar context. Calm narration, captions, and observational framing encourage the viewer to treat impossible animals as if they belonged to a real ecosystem.

Prompting as an iterative discovery process

Stevenson described text-to-video prompting as a repeated cycle: write a prompt, inspect the result, refine the prompt, and try again. The process was not a reliable way to request a finished shot with guaranteed details. It was closer to searching through a large space of possibilities.

He encountered a particular problem when moving from lower-resolution exploratory generations to higher-resolution versions. The higher-resolution or upscaled result could change details he liked, alter the camera angle, or move the subject within the shot. A technically improved version was not necessarily the creatively preferred version.

Sora also interpreted language literally in unexpected ways. In one experiment, Stevenson asked for a zoom-in on a helicopter. The model produced an unintended combination of a helicopter and a camera zoom lens. The mistake was not useful as a literal response, but it illustrated the model’s tendency to transform ambiguous language into visual objects.

Stevenson nevertheless found the model easier to steer when he used more creative prompts. That is an important distinction: imaginative language could sometimes lead to more interesting results than an overly rigid attempt to describe every visual fact.

Unpredictability became part of the style

All of the fictional animals in the film were generated with Sora, but the finished documentary still required selection and editorial assembly. Stevenson tried many creatures, kept the strongest clips, connected them through editing, and added captions and narration.

The model’s unpredictability was part of the attraction. A fox-crow changed between two and four legs in different generations. Some results were too disturbing to use. Rather than treating every inconsistency as a defect to be eliminated, Stevenson used the model’s surprises as a source of ideas—while retaining the human authority to decide what belonged in the final film.

What the films actually proved

The three shorts were an early demonstration that generative video could contribute more than isolated visual tricks. Under favorable conditions, Sora could produce:

  • recognizable motion and expressive imagery;
  • short sequences with enough coherence to support editing;
  • occasional continuity across shots;
  • unusual transformations and camera movements; and
  • material suitable for fictional worlds, visual poems, and documentary-style presentation.

That was a meaningful step beyond a gallery of disconnected demonstrations. A filmmaker could begin with a concept, generate many possible shots, identify a visual direction, and assemble a sequence with a recognizable mood or premise.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

But the films did not prove that early Sora could:

  • reliably maintain anatomy, text, or object details;
  • guarantee continuity across every shot;
  • produce the desired composition at a higher resolution without changing it;
  • replace editing, visual-effects work, sound design, narration, or music; or
  • independently deliver a finished short from one prompt.

The production evidence supports a more precise description: Sora was a powerful source-footage generator and ideation tool inside a tightly curated filmmaking process. The human contribution included concept development, prompt iteration, generation management, selection, continuity judgment, editing, visual-effects repair, sound, narration, and presentation.

The larger lesson: generation changed the first draft, not the need for a filmmaker

These experiments moved the creative conversation from “Can a model make an impressive moving image?” to “What kind of film can a person discover by directing a model through thousands of possible images?” That is a more interesting question—and a more honest one.

For Shy Kids, the challenge was continuity and repair. For Trillo, it was aesthetic discovery. For Stevenson, it was the productive tension between intention and surprise. Each filmmaker used the model’s strengths differently, but all three relied on human curation to turn unstable generations into a coherent viewing experience.

That distinction also explains why a short film can look effortless while requiring substantial work behind the scenes. Viewers see the selected shots and the smooth final cut. They do not see the rejected generations, broken anatomy, altered camera angles, misspelled signs, inconsistent colors, unwanted faces, or manual fixes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The most accurate historical description is therefore not that Sora “made” three films. Sora generated important visual material for three films, while filmmakers supplied the intentions, selections, corrections, structure, and sound that made the material legible as cinema.

Provenance and safety context

OpenAI said that Sora-generated videos included C2PA metadata and, depending on the product version, visible watermarks or other provenance signals. OpenAI also described safeguards involving deepfakes, likeness, uploaded material, harmful content, and moderation.

Those are descriptions of OpenAI’s stated safeguards, not proof that provenance systems or AI-video detection are perfect. Metadata can be lost during later processing, and no single signal should be treated as a complete guarantee of origin. For historical viewers and creators, the practical lesson is to preserve project records and clearly describe how generated material was used.

Current status of Sora

OpenAI eventually launched Sora as a standalone product in December 2024, describing capabilities such as output up to 1080p, clips up to 20 seconds, multiple aspect ratios, asset extension, remixing, blending, and storyboard-style controls. OpenAI announced Sora 2 on September 30, 2025, describing improvements in physics, realism, steerability, synchronized dialogue, and sound effects.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those later capabilities should not be projected backward onto the March 2024 experiments. More importantly, OpenAI’s current product notices say the Sora web and app experiences were discontinued on April 26, 2026. The Sora API is scheduled to be discontinued on September 24, 2026. Availability and dates may differ by product surface or change through subsequent notices, so readers should consult OpenAI’s latest official announcement before relying on the service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did Sora make the three films by itself?

No. Sora generated much of the visual source material, but the filmmakers developed the concepts, iterated on prompts, selected usable clips, edited the films, and added narration, music, captions, or visual-effects work. Air Head also received substantial manual cleanup.

Which filmmaker focused on character consistency?

Shy Kids used Air Head to test whether Sora could maintain a recognizable balloon-headed character across shots. Walter Woodman said the experiment was mostly successful, although the footage still required selection and repair.

What was Paul Trillo trying to achieve with Abstract?

Trillo used prompt iteration to explore Sora’s visual range and find a more organic, cinematic aesthetic resembling vintage 16mm film. He described the footage as used without color correction or additional visual effects.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I currently use Sora through its web or app experience?

According to OpenAI’s current notices cited in this article, the Sora web and app experiences ended on April 26, 2026. OpenAI says the Sora API is scheduled to end on September 24, 2026. The article is therefore historical rather than a current Sora-use tutorial.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The first filmmaker experiments with Sora were impressive because they showed AI-generated video becoming useful for scenes, sequences, and fictional worlds. They were also revealing because the finished results depended on human taste and labor. Sora supplied possibility; the filmmakers supplied the film.
