How The View Cohosts Reacted to Donald Trump’s 2024 Election Victory

The View’s first post-election discussion on November 6, 2024, featured sharply different reactions to Donald Trump’s victory over Kamala Harris—from acceptance of the democratic process to Sunny Hostin’s fears about rights and a second Trump term.

The View’s first post-election episode after Donald Trump defeated Kamala Harris showed a panel divided in emotion and emphasis—but not divided over the basic fact of the result. Joy Behar, Sara Haines, and Alyssa Farah Griffin stressed that voters had spoken and the democratic process had to be respected. Sunny Hostin delivered the most distressed response, warning about the possible consequences for rights, her children, and the country.

A divided but reality-based reaction

The View returned on Wednesday, November 6, 2024—one day after Donald Trump defeated Kamala Harris—with its first post-election discussion. The six-person panel did not respond as a single bloc. Some cohosts stressed that voters had made their decision and that the democratic process had to be respected. Others focused on what Trump’s return to the White House could mean for constitutional protections, reproductive rights, their families, and the country’s future.

The most accurate way to understand the segment is as a contrast between accepting the election result and rejecting the political consequences of that result. The cohosts expressed deep disagreement with Trump and anxiety about a second term, but the available episode description and contemporaneous coverage do not support portraying the panel as denying the official outcome.

Who was on the panel?

The episode featured moderator Whoopi Goldberg and cohosts Joy Behar, Sunny Hostin, Ana Navarro, Sara Haines, and Alyssa Farah Griffin. Griffin brought a particularly distinct perspective: before joining the program, she had served in the Trump administration and later became a prominent Republican critic of Trump.

The Trump reaction appears near the beginning of the official full-broadcast listing, at approximately 3:50 into the program. It was not election-night coverage. The show aired the following morning and used the result as the starting point for a broader political post-mortem.

Joy Behar: respect the process, despite rejecting the result

Joy Behar’s response supplied one of the clearest process-focused perspectives at the table. She said her takeaway was that the system had worked, that the country was living in a democracy, and that voters had expressed what they wanted.

That acknowledgment did not mean she supported Trump or agreed with the decision. Behar strongly disagreed with the result while distinguishing that disagreement from refusing to recognize how the election had been decided. Her comments helped establish the segment’s central tension: a person can oppose the winner and still accept that voters made the choice through the electoral process.

Sunny Hostin voiced the strongest alarm

Sunny Hostin delivered the most emotionally distressed reaction. She described herself as “profoundly disturbed” and connected Trump’s second term to concerns about constitutional protections, women’s rights, her children, and the country’s direction.

One of the most personal elements of Hostin’s comments was her fear that her daughter could have fewer rights than she had. That concern placed reproductive rights and the broader consequences of the election at the center of her response. Her remarks were not simply about losing a political contest; they reflected a belief that the result could materially change rights and protections for people close to her.

Sara Haines and Alyssa Farah Griffin emphasized listening to voters

Sara Haines and Alyssa Farah Griffin offered a more conciliatory, or at least more process-oriented, counterweight to the distress expressed by Hostin. Their comments emphasized acknowledging what had happened and listening to the voters who had chosen Trump.

Griffin’s position carried additional significance because of her previous role inside the Trump administration. Her participation allowed the discussion to include both criticism of Trump and recognition that his victory represented a real decision by the electorate. The panel’s disagreement was therefore not neatly divided between people who cared about democracy and people who did not; it was more accurately a disagreement about what the result meant and how to respond to it.

Whoopi Goldberg maintained personal distance from Trump

Whoopi Goldberg acknowledged Trump’s status as president-elect while saying that she would not refer to him in the same way she had previously. That was a statement of personal resistance and rhetorical distance, not evidence that she disputed the election’s outcome.

The distinction matters because short descriptions of the segment can make a personal refusal to use a name sound like a rejection of the result itself. In context, the panel’s discussion was about the implications of Trump’s victory—not about claiming that the election had not been won by Trump.

Ana Navarro and the broader criticism of Trump

Ana Navarro also took part in the post-election conversation. Her reaction fits the program’s broader pattern: recognizing the official result while criticizing Trump’s conduct and political record.

Because the panel included different ideological and personal relationships to Trump, the segment worked less as a unanimous declaration than as a set of competing responses. Some cohosts concentrated on democratic procedure and voter intent; others concentrated on policy, rights, and the risks they associated with Trump’s return to power.

The episode moved beyond immediate emotion

The Trump reaction was only the opening portion of the broadcast’s election analysis. The official outline identifies follow-up discussions about:

The accompanying Behind the Table podcast episode, released on November 6, also featured Joy Behar and Sunny Hostin discussing their takeaways from the result, what they expected during the next four years of a Trump presidency, and where they might find a silver lining.

That broader programming is important. Describing the broadcast only as a “meltdown” misses the portions devoted to understanding the electorate and assessing Democratic failures. Hostin was plainly fearful and upset, but the program also acknowledged that Trump had won and attempted to analyze why.
