How the Duggar Family Has Responded to Death Hoaxes and Rumors

Two reports describe false death claims about Duggar family members, but they do not establish a standard family-wide response to hoaxes.

Reporting documents two separate false death claims involving Duggar family members: a 2021 rumor about Josh Duggar and a 2025 claim about Jim Bob Duggar. In the first case, a family representative reportedly denied the claim; in the second, the coverage found no official family response. Those examples do not establish a consistent family-wide policy for dealing with death hoaxes.

What happened in the reported death hoaxes?

Josh Duggar: a false claim reported in July 2021

The Hollywood Gossip reported that a social-media meme featuring Josh Duggar’s mug shot prompted speculation that he had died. In a follow-up, the outlet described a counterfeit obituary and attributed a denial to a family representative. The report does not say that Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar personally issued a statement.

Jim Bob Duggar: a false claim reported in November 2025

LoudFact reported that a Facebook page named “The Duggar Family” posted an apparent obituary claiming Jim Bob had died after cancer. The article said it found no official family announcement or confirmation from a credible news outlet. The page’s name alone does not establish that it was an official family account.

Is Jim Bob Duggar dead? Did Josh Duggar die?

The cited coverage characterizes both claims as false: Josh Duggar’s reported death in 2021 and Jim Bob Duggar’s reported death in 2025. The reports are secondary coverage, rather than a complete public record of every post or response. A graphic or obituary-style post is not proof of a death; look for confirmation from the family, reliable news organizations, or relevant public authorities before treating such a claim as fact.

Does the family have a standard response to death rumors?

The available examples do not show a consistent family-wide approach. The Josh Duggar report attributed a denial to a family representative, while the Jim Bob Duggar report did not identify an official family statement addressing the rumor. The family’s official site has statements from Jim Bob and Michelle about other matters: a June 2023 note about a documentary and family relationships, and a December 2021 statement about Joshua Duggar’s guilty verdict. Neither addresses these death claims: June 2023 note and December 2021 statement.

How are these rumors different from a confirmed death?

Mary Duggar’s death in June 2019 was reported as a real event, not a hoax. TheWrap reported that the family announced her death and quoted Washington County Coroner Roger Morris attributing it to accidental drowning. That separate, reported death should not be conflated with later false claims about Josh or Jim Bob Duggar.
