No public evidence in the reviewed court record or contemporaneous settlement reports establishes that Kesha has a $5 million net worth—or that the lawsuit against Dr. Luke left her with that amount. The parties settled in June 2023, but the settlement terms were not made public. The case’s history explains what was decided and what remains unknown; it does not verify the headline’s financial claim.
What really happened between Kesha and Dr. Luke?
Kesha, whose legal name is Kesha Rose Sebert, and producer Lukasz Gottwald, known professionally as Dr. Luke, entered a six-album recording agreement in 2005, according to the New York Court of Appeals opinion. In 2014, Kesha filed a lawsuit in California alleging sexual abuse and seeking to rescind her contracts and obtain damages. Gottwald filed a defamation case against her in New York the same day, alleging that her statements were false.

Those descriptions are allegations and positions taken in litigation, not findings that a court made about whether the alleged assault occurred. The appellate ruling in 2023 addressed legal standards and claims in the defamation case; it was not a trial verdict resolving the underlying allegations.
What did the New York Court of Appeals decide?
On June 13, 2023, the New York Court of Appeals held that Gottwald was a limited-purpose public figure for this litigation. That classification meant he had to prove actual malice for the relevant defamation claim. The majority wrote: “We agree with the dissent below that Gottwald meets this standard and is a limited-purpose public figure.”

The opinion also considered litigation privileges and how New York’s amended anti-SLAPP law applied to the pending action. It concerned the legal framework and claims before the court, rather than deciding at trial whether the allegations were true. Read the full opinion for the court’s reasoning.
What is known about the June 2023 settlement?
On June 22, 2023, the parties announced that they had settled. Contemporaneous reports from Reuters and the Los Angeles Times said the terms were not public. The announcement therefore does not establish a payment amount, a transfer of rights, or the precise outcome for the recording contracts. The case settled before a trial.

Does the case establish a $5 million net worth?
No. The cited court opinion and settlement coverage do not substantiate a $5 million estimate or connect that amount to the lawsuit. Because the settlement’s financial terms were not disclosed in those reports, they do not show that Kesha received $5 million—or any other specific sum—from the settlement.
The court opinion says Kesha’s first album sold over two million copies. That is a sales figure, not a measure of her personal earnings or wealth. Album sales are not the same as money retained by an artist: sales do not, by themselves, disclose revenue shares, expenses, taxes, other income, assets, or liabilities. Without that information and a clear method for calculating an estimate, album sales cannot establish net worth.

Net worth means the value of a person’s assets minus liabilities. It should not be treated as interchangeable with album sales, gross revenue, the value of a recording contract, or an unverified third-party estimate. The sources cited here do not provide an authoritative net-worth figure for Kesha.
