It adapts the story’s first portion as the first of two films, expanding some music and Emerald City story material for the screen.
How much of the musical does the 2024 film cover?
The stage musical tells the full story in one production. The 2024 film covers its first chapter, so its ending is not the end of the musical’s story. Comparing the film with the entire stage show means accounting for that boundary: some events and material from the later portion of the stage story are outside this film’s scope.

Wicked began as Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel, which inspired the musical that opened on Broadway in 2003. The film adapts that musical, rather than the novel directly. NBCUniversal described the screen adaptation as a chance to explore the Wicked universe beyond what a stage production can show, quoting producer Marc Platt: “The film of Wicked allows us to expand and explore the Wicked universe in a way that isn’t possible on stage.”
NBCUniversal reported in 2024 that the stage musical had reached more than 65 million audience members across 100-plus cities in 16 countries and generated more than $6 billion in global receipts. Those are the studio’s figures, not independently audited totals. NBCUniversal’s overview of the film and musical also gives context for the production’s long stage history.

What changed from the Broadway musical?
Some songs have been lengthened or adjusted
The film retains familiar songs from the stage show, but some are longer or shaped differently to work with screen action. Composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz told GRAMMY.com that the film’s larger visual world called for music with greater scale. He described a recording ensemble of 85 musicians, compared with “the 23 or so” available on Broadway; that is Schwartz’s comparison in the interview, not a general count for every Broadway production.
The change is not simply a matter of putting the stage arrangements on a soundtrack. On screen, a song can accompany movement through a large setting or carry action across edited scenes. The live stage version, by contrast, unfolds in a theatre before an audience in real time.
“One Short Day” gives Emerald City more room
The movie expands the Emerald City sequence around “One Short Day,” giving more time to Wizomania, the Wizard’s propaganda, and the Grimmerie. Schwartz said the expansion helps show how the Wizard creates a false image and history, while also connecting his spectacle to his search for someone who can perform magic and help him stay in power. The added material makes the city’s pageantry part of the story’s political machinery, not just a musical stop along the way.
Recognizable details were deliberately preserved
Schwartz also recounted choices that kept familiar character beats intact. In his account, Ariana Grande insisted the line “The Wizard will see you now!” remain in “One Short Day,” saying, “If you cut that line, I’m quitting the movie. You have to have ‘The Wizard will see you now!’” He also said she rejected a proposed rhythmic refresh of “Popular,” preferring to preserve Glinda’s character rather than make the performance sound like Ariana Grande playing Glinda. These are Schwartz’s anecdotes about the creative process.

How does the film’s music and performance approach differ?
Universal said songs were performed live on set whenever possible. That describes a production approach, not a guarantee that every vocal in every finished scene was recorded live; the final film may use different recording elements. The larger studio ensemble Schwartz described is another distinction in scale from Broadway’s orchestra, but it does not by itself establish that one version is musically superior.
The screen adaptation can use locations, camera movement, editing, and visual effects to enlarge the world around a song. The stage production has its own strengths: performers share the same space with the audience, and the story’s theatrical effects happen live. These are different ways of staging the same musical world, rather than a simple short-versus-long comparison.
What else was released alongside the film?

The official soundtrack is another way to revisit the film’s music. Universal Music Canada’s December 3, 2024 announcement said it had the highest debut ever on the Billboard 200 for a theatrical adaptation of a stage musical, and reached number one on Top Album Sales, Soundtracks, and Vinyl Albums. Those are the label’s reported chart claims. Its soundtrack announcement lists tracks and provides the label’s chart details.
