Which stones does Thanos already have?
Before the film’s opening, Thanos has taken the Power Stone from Xandar. The movie does not show that acquisition; it begins with him already in possession of the stone. ComicBook.com’s account of the collection order identifies the Power Stone as the off-screen starting point.

How does Thanos get the stones during the film?
- Space Stone — the Tesseract. In the opening sequence, Thanos intercepts the Asgardian survivors’ ship and extracts the blue Space Stone from the Tesseract.
- Reality Stone — Knowhere. He takes the red Reality Stone, which had been kept in the Collector’s collection in its Aether form.
- Soul Stone — Vormir. To obtain the orange Soul Stone, Thanos sacrifices Gamora, whom he loves. Her death is the price he must pay for it.
- Time Stone — Titan. Doctor Strange gives Thanos the green Time Stone to save Tony Stark.
- Mind Stone — Wakanda. Wanda attempts to destroy the yellow Mind Stone while it is in Vision’s forehead. Thanos uses the Time Stone to reverse her act, then removes the Mind Stone from Vision.
The film’s sequence is Power, Space, Reality, Soul, Time, then Mind. TIME’s ending explanation discusses the climactic events, while ComicBook.com reports the collection order.
Why is Thanos collecting them?
Marvel’s official film page describes his goal: collect all six Infinity Stones and use them to impose his will on reality. His collection is therefore not six unrelated encounters; the stones’ combined power is the objective driving his actions.
