Teyana Taylor’s rise as a screen presence was not a sudden switch from music to movies. She had acted for years before earning her first serious leading role in A Thousand and One (2023), and her performance as Perfidia Beverly Hills in Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another brought fresh attention to that work. Alongside the acting, Taylor returned to music in August 2025 with Escape Room, after announcing a music retirement in 2020.
How Taylor’s career led from choreography to film
Taylor’s creative career began before her recording breakthrough. The Guardian reports that she started working as a choreographer at 15, including work for Beyoncé, before building a career in R&B. Her screen work also began well before her recent acclaimed roles: ELLE says she had been acting since 2010, with appearances including Stomp the Yard 2 and Madea’s Big Happy Family.
That history matters when describing her ascent. A Thousand and One was not Taylor’s first acting job; ELLE called it her first serious leading role. Taylor played Inez in A.V. Rockwell’s 2023 film, which won the Grand Jury Prize at that year’s Sundance Film Festival. Taylor told ELLE she wanted to be taken seriously beyond the kinds of roles she had previously been offered.
Why she stepped away from music—and what changed
In 2020, Taylor announced her retirement from music. The Guardian’s retrospective describes the announcement as a response to frustration with an industry that left her feeling constrained. It was not a permanent departure: in a 2023 ELLE interview, Taylor said that after retiring she wanted to focus on acting and directing.

She described A Thousand and One as the first project she did after “stepping into that world”—meaning her focus on acting and directing. That pivot helps explain why the film marked a career milestone for her even though she already had screen credits.
What Taylor does in One Battle After Another
In Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, Taylor plays Perfidia Beverly Hills, a member of the French 75 revolutionary group. Vogue describes Perfidia as dynamic and unapologetic. She is central to the film’s early movement, and the role has helped renew attention to Taylor’s acting. Vogue gave the film’s theatrical release date as September 26, 2025; that is a past release date, not an upcoming one.

Taylor told Vogue that Perfidia is someone viewers “don’t always agree with,” but called her “a badass and unapologetically herself.” She also recalled improvising a machine-gun line and knowing it would “look iconic.” These details point to a performance shaped by both the character and the film’s collaborative process.
The Guardian reports that Taylor learned by observing Anderson and the cast. Anderson also encouraged her to bring her own “extra little spice” to a scene. That account fits the approach Taylor describes elsewhere: she continues to treat acting as a craft to study rather than a field she has already mastered. “I am a sponge,” she told The Guardian, adding, “I’m never above being a student.”

Escape Room marks her return to recording
Taylor released Escape Room in August 2025. Vogue describes it as her fourth studio album and connects its themes to love and heartbreak in the period after her divorce. ELLE calls it a 22-track comeback after a five-year hiatus. Taylor told Vogue, “I love that the album is healing to people.”
The album’s return does not erase the reasons Taylor stepped back from music. Instead, it follows a period in which she focused on acting and directing, then came back with a project shaped by her own experiences. The sources describe a personal album and a renewed recording career, but do not establish sales, chart performance, or streaming totals.

A creative career that spans more than two fields
Music and acting sit alongside Taylor’s work and ambitions in choreography, creative direction, and directing. Her career is better understood as a widening set of creative roles than as a one-way move from one industry to another. She has spoken about wanting to direct, and 2025 profiles discussed preparation for Get Lite as a directorial debut, as well as acting work connected to All’s Fair and The Rip. Those reports are time-sensitive; they do not by themselves establish current production, release, or viewing availability.
Across the different phases, the change is chiefly one of scale and emphasis: earlier screen appearances led to a serious lead in A Thousand and One and a prominent role in One Battle After Another, while a stated retirement gave way to a self-directed return with Escape Room. Taylor’s own description of herself as a learner offers a through-line across those shifts.
