In Provincials: Postcards from the Peripheries, Sumana Roy challenges the idea that cultural importance flows from metropolitan centers to supposedly lesser places. Moving between memoir, literary criticism, and cultural history, she asks who gets called provincial—and what that label hides about the lives, reading, and creative work of people outside dominant cultural centers.
What does “provincial” mean in Roy’s book?
Roy treats “provincial” not as a simple synonym for rural, unsophisticated, or culturally insignificant, but as a position shaped by who has the power to define the center. Her book questions the assumptions that metropolitan life is the measure of cultural relevance and that rural and urban experience belong in separate worlds.

The publisher frames the book as a reclamation of provincial life’s dignity, with postcards from the peripheries of India, Europe, America, and the Middle East. That geographic range matters: Roy’s subject is not one isolated region but the broader habit of treating certain places and people as peripheral.
How does Roy build her argument?
The book combines personal memory with literary analysis and portraits of people and places. Rather than presenting a conventional, linear argument, Roy moves through literary, philosophical, and biographical sketches. The Indian Express review connects this form to questions of place, memory, attention, and cultural life.

Siliguri, where Roy grew up and is based, provides a recurring point of view. In a Himal interview, Roy discusses provincial literature, Tagore, the divide between rural and urban life, and the experience of reading from a place often treated as peripheral. The interview also connects her perspective to the feeling of being belated in relation to metropolitan culture—and to the pleasure of language itself.
Which writers and cultural figures appear?
Roy’s examples cross regions, languages, and familiar literary categories. Yale University Press names Tagore, Shakespeare, John Clare, the Bhakti poets, T. S. Eliot, J. M. Coetzee, V. S. Naipaul, the Brontës, Kishore Kumar, and Annie Ernaux among the figures the book considers. The Indian Express review also discusses Derrida, Heidegger, and Hindi writer Bhuwaneshwar, alongside Roy’s attention to word histories and the experience of English pronunciation.

The range helps make the book’s central point concrete: cultural life does not neatly divide into a prestigious metropolitan canon and a lesser provincial one. Roy looks at how language, place, class, memory, and access shape what is read, heard, and valued.
What do reviewers say about the book?
Responses differ. The publisher’s page includes selected endorsements praising the book’s hybrid form and style; these are publisher-chosen quotations, not a measure of critical consensus. The Indian Express review reads it as a meditation on attention and on the relation between place, memory, and culture.

Rajesh Sharma’s review in The Tribune is more critical. It praises some passages while arguing that the book’s genres do not always cohere and questioning aspects of its framing of provincial identity. Those are the reviewer’s judgments, rather than a settled verdict on the book.
