CBS News Miami reported in May 2024 that he was among the final five, and SPIN later identified him as one of the final three. Kenzie Petty won the jury vote, according to SPIN. Katzman’s rock-forward persona made him one of the season’s most recognizable players, and the “unlikely hero” label on this profile is an editorial framing, not a title the show awarded.
Who Ben Katzman is
Katzman’s public identity begins outside the game. In a pre-season interview with Parade, he described himself as a musician and teacher. He said he teaches guitar and student rock bands, and that music has been a lifelong part of his life. He also linked his teaching to a simple idea: helping students make music as themselves rather than as imitations of someone else.
Miami shows up in his own framing as well. Speaking to CBS News Miami, he offered a line that doubles as a fair description of his personality on the show: “I think Miami is a very special brand of crazy.”
He also told Parade that he had been approached about reality television before, but that Survivor was the show he wanted. In his account, the appeal was the premise and a chance to show his own playful, characterful side. That is his recollection of his own motives, not a verified account of how casting decisions were made.

The season at a glance
Season 46 is the reference point for everything else in this profile. The dates below come from CBS and from the outlets that reported on Katzman’s progress.

| August 23, 2024 | Release date reported for Katzman’s album Tears on the Beach, which he recorded after the Fiji experience. | SPIN, Suzy Exposito |
The May report was published before the finale aired, so it reflects what was known at that point. SPIN’s July feature is the only source here that places Katzman in the final three and reports the winner.
How he reached the final three
Katzman’s path is most useful to understand as a sequence: he survived the early game, made it through to the final five, and then reached the final three. The reporting does not provide a full episode-by-episode account of his strategy, so the points below stay with what sources actually state.

Reaching the final five
CBS News Miami’s May 22, 2024 report describes him as among the final five and includes his comments on reaching the finale. Because that piece was written before the season ended, it documents his position at that moment rather than his final result.

SPIN’s July 8, 2024 feature, based on an interview with Katzman, places him among the final three. It also names Kenzie Petty as the winner of the jury vote. The outlet does not publish a jury tally in the portion of reporting available, so readers should not treat any specific vote count as confirmed.
The endgame and the jury
The jury outcome is the single most important result in the season. It belongs to Kenzie Petty, and Katzman’s place among the finalists is a placement, not a win. Reaching the final three is a documented achievement; it should not be confused with taking the title.

The hardest part: food, sleep and panic attacks
SPIN reports that Katzman described a difficult stretch in Fiji that included food deprivation, sleep problems and nightly panic attacks. Those details come from his own description in the interview. They are not a clinical assessment, and nothing in the reporting establishes a diagnosis.
His account matters for a reason beyond the game itself. He described the season as a real test of endurance, and he said that the strain did not stop him from continuing to play the game. That detail is central to the case for the “unlikely hero” framing, though readers should weigh it as one player’s testimony.

Why “unlikely hero” is a framing, and what supports it
“Unlikely hero” is an editorial interpretation. Survivor does not confer that label, and no source calls Katzman a hero. The phrase works as a profile frame because several points in the reporting point in the same direction:

- His background sat outside the usual Survivor type. Katzman described himself as a musician and teacher who works with guitar students and rock bands, not as a conventional athlete or strategist.
- He reached the final three. SPIN’s July 2024 reporting places him in the last group of players, which is the strongest factual basis for the “hero” word.
- He described the strain openly. His account of food deprivation, sleep problems and panic attacks shows what he endured to keep playing.
- He drew a link between the game and his work. In SPIN’s interview, he compares adapting on tour with adapting on the island. Readers can judge for themselves how persuasive that comparison is; it is his perspective, not a finding.
The label does not require Katzman to have won, and it does not imply that Petty’s victory was less deserved. It describes a player who came from an unexpected background and kept going through a hard season.
Charlie Davis and the post-finale view
After the finale, Parade interviewed Katzman as a runner-up. In the excerpt that is available, he praised fellow finalist Charlie Davis, pointing to Davis’s composure, strategic positioning and love of the game. That excerpt gives a sense of how Katzman judged the endgame from the inside, but it does not describe the final Tribal Council in full, and it should not be read as a complete account of that night.

SPIN reports that Katzman recorded Tears on the Beach, an album inspired by his Fiji experience, and gives its release date as August 23, 2024. The album is the most direct link between the show and his work as a musician.

Quotations and context
The quotations in this profile are reproduced as published in the cited interviews, not from full transcripts. The lines from Parade, CBS News Miami and SPIN are his own words, but each interview contains surrounding context that shapes meaning, so the complete pieces are worth reading for anyone quoting him further.
- CBS News Miami, May 22, 2024: “I think Miami is a very special brand of crazy.”
- Parade, pre-season: “I teach how to play guitar, and I teach student rock bands.”
- SPIN, July 8, 2024: “But I’m grateful that me and my friends are doing well within the indie music community and getting to tour the world.”
Taken together, these lines show a player whose identity was rooted in music before he entered the game, and who spoke about that identity without treating it as a gimmick.
Katzman is best understood as a Miami musician and guitar teacher who reached the final three of Survivor 46, not as a winner, and whose openness about a hard season is the most lasting part of his story.
