That path ended with The Late Show’s final episode in May 2026.
How Colbert got his start in comedy
After graduating from Northwestern in 1986, Colbert moved to Chicago and worked in the offices of Second City. He took improv classes, joined the touring company and met fellow performers Amy Sedaris and Paul Dinello. The three later created and starred in the sketch series Exit 57 and the comedy Strangers with Candy. Career profile
Improv and ensemble performance gave Colbert a foundation in character work and collaboration. He has described writing as a practical route into performance: “I started to be a writer because I had to write for myself cuz no one would cast me in anything.” In another interview, he recalled, “I was a Chicago actor for eleven years and couldn’t get arrested.” CBS Sacramento interview
How The Daily Show made him recognizable
Colbert began appearing as a correspondent on The Daily Show in 1997. He played a conservative correspondent, a satirical role that brought his character work to a national cable audience. This was the bridge between his early ensemble comedy and a show built around his own persona. Career profile

How The Colbert Report turned a correspondent into the star
Comedy Central launched The Colbert Report in 2005. Colbert expanded his Daily Show persona into a blustery right-wing pundit and made that constructed character the center of a parody of cable-news talk television. The series ran through December 18, 2014. Career chronology
The character drew on real cable-news pundits, including Bill O’Reilly and Joe Scarborough, but the satire depended on the gap between performer and persona. In a 2006 interview with Morley Safer, published by CBS News in 2015, Colbert joked: “I wish I could be as shameless as the real guys,” he says. “But I have a shred of concern that I might be perceived as a jerk, and I don’t think they do because I think they believe what they’re saying.” CBS News

How he moved from satire to The Late Show
After David Letterman announced his retirement, CBS selected Colbert as his successor in April 2014. The Late Show with Stephen Colbert premiered on September 8, 2015. The new role called for a different balance: rather than remaining inside a fully constructed pundit character, Colbert presented more as himself, while carrying forward political satire and making interviews central to the program. The format change was an extension of skills developed earlier in his career. Improv and sketch work honed character and timing; The Daily Show gave him a durable satirical point of view; The Colbert Report demonstrated how a single persona could anchor a program; and the CBS show placed his comedy in the broader late-night mix of monologue and conversation.
What happened to The Late Show
CBS announced in July 2025 that The Late Show would end after the 2025–26 season. The final episode aired in May 2026. CBS described the cancellation as a financial decision. The timing of the announcement prompted public questions about the company’s motives, as the Associated Press reported; those questions are distinct from CBS’s stated rationale and do not establish another cause. Why Colbert’s career arc matters
Colbert’s path shows how one performance skill set can travel across formats. Chicago improv and sketch comedy led to television ensemble work; a correspondent role supplied a recognizable satirical character; that character became a show’s main attraction; and the late-night host role broadened the performance into a mix of comedy and interviews. His ascent was cumulative: each stage gave him a new format in which to use skills he had already developed.
