Star Trek: Discovery season 5 returns to the question raised by The Next Generation episode “The Chase”: why do so many alien species look humanoid? The older episode revealed that an ancient species seeded humanoid life and left a message in DNA. Discovery takes up a question it left open—how the Progenitors did it—and builds a season-long search around their technology.
What “The Chase” revealed about the Progenitors
In the sixth-season Star Trek: The Next Generation episode “The Chase,” an investigation brings together Federation, Klingon, Romulan, and Cardassian representatives. Their discovery answers a long-running question about the franchise’s humanoid species: an ancient people seeded life across the galaxy and encoded a message in the DNA of the species they created.

That revelation explains why many Star Trek aliens share a humanoid form. It does not, however, spell out the mechanics of the seeding or turn the episode into a search for the Progenitors’ technology.
What Discovery adds to the story
The two stories answer different questions. “The Chase” supplies the broad explanation for humanoid life; Discovery explores how the Progenitors may have guided life toward similar forms. In season 5, that unanswered “how” becomes an adventure centered on finding their technology.

| The Next Generation, “The Chase” | Why do many species look humanoid? | An investigation reveals that an ancient species seeded humanoid life and left a message in DNA. |

Was a Next Gen story actually scrapped?
Not according to the account of the shows’ development. The story that Discovery revisits is “The Chase,” but the concept of making the Progenitors central to a story was considered for Discovery season 4 and then left out as that season’s 10-C storyline developed.
Showrunner Michelle Paradise said the episode had “stuck with me” because it “explores such big ideas,” while the writing team had questions it did not pursue at the time. The Progenitors later became central to season 5. So the scrapped element was a possible season 4 storyline—not a discarded Next Generation story.
Are the Progenitors based on real science?
The Progenitors are fictional. StarTrek.com points to panspermia as a limited scientific analogy: it is a real hypothesis that some building blocks for life may have come from space. That hypothesis does not establish that ancient alien beings seeded humanoid life, or that the Progenitors existed.

StarTrek.com traces the humanoid-seeding question through earlier franchise stories and identifies “The Chase” as the episode that directly answers it. Discovery does not replace that answer; it uses the mystery’s unexplained mechanics as the starting point for a new plot. Viewers can follow the thread from the multi-power investigation in “The Chase” to season 5’s technology hunt.
