The development team said it could not offer a service players would find satisfying over a long period. The announcement did not give a more specific reason, and it said the Kingdom Hearts series would continue, with work on Kingdom Hearts IV ongoing at that time.
Why was Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link canceled?
Square Enix’s development team said it had worked on developing and adjusting the game, but concluded that offering a service players would find satisfactory over a long period would be difficult. It therefore decided to cancel development. The statement, reproduced in Gematsu’s May 14, 2025 report, gives no narrower explanation. It does not identify a technical, financial, or organizational cause, so claims assigning the cancellation to one of those factors would go beyond what the company stated.

Was Missing-Link ever released?
No. Square Enix said it was canceling development before the start of service, so Missing-Link did not reach its announced service start. It had been announced in April 2022, followed by a closed prototype test in January 2023. A release was initially planned for 2024, then delayed in November 2024 to an unannounced date. The project was canceled on May 14, 2025, according to Gematsu’s timeline and report.
What was Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link?
Square Enix described it as a smartphone RPG built around location information and real-world walking: players would use movement in the real world to progress through in-game adventures. Its official safety guidelines, last updated January 31, 2024, also described a hands-free mode that could automatically start battles with nearby Heartless and interact with nearby recovery spots. The guidelines warned players to stay aware of their surroundings, avoid playing in dangerous places or while driving, and avoid revealing their current location in posted screenshots or videos. These materials describe the intended design and test-era guidance, not a publicly released game.

What did Square Enix say about the rest of Kingdom Hearts?
In the May 2025 cancellation announcement, Square Enix apologized to people who had been awaiting Missing-Link and said the Kingdom Hearts series would continue. It also said work on Kingdom Hearts IV was ongoing. That is the status the company gave at the time of the announcement; it is not a release-date statement.
How does the cancellation fit the series’ history?
Square Enix Holdings’ Annual Report 2025 describes Kingdom Hearts as a role-playing game series created through collaboration between Disney and Square Enix. The first game was released for PlayStation 2 in March 2002, and the series later expanded with additional entries. The report records more than 38 million units in global package shipments and digital sales as of the end of June 2025; that is a franchise-wide figure, not a sales total for Missing-Link.
