But the cast’s sadness about that change is not verified by the accessible interviews: the on-record comments discuss adaptation, pacing, and relationships, not the specific emotional reactions claimed in the headline.
What was the biggest change?
GeekChamp’s February 18, 2026 article points to the animated series’ shortened and reshaped Vax’ildan arc as its central change. It focuses particularly on Vax’s relationship with the Raven Queen. That identifies what the headline is about; it does not establish that the cast described the change as sad.
The distinction matters because Critical Role’s first campaign unfolded as improvised tabletop play, while the animated series tells its story through scripted episodes. The adaptation has to arrange events and relationships within a different structure. In a September 11, 2024 interview with TV Insider, cast members discussed those choices, but the interview does not substantiate the specific sadness claim.
What did the cast say about adapting the story?
Taliesin Jaffe on relationships
Taliesin Jaffe, who plays Percy, said that truncating parts of the story “weirdly gave some of our relationships breathing room.” The comment describes an adaptation trade-off: condensing material does not necessarily mean that every relationship gets less attention.

Laura Bailey on intimate conversations
Laura Bailey discussed adding intimate conversations that the original game did not foreground. That is an example of the show making emotional material explicit in a scripted form, rather than simply transferring every scene from the campaign.
Liam O’Brien on Vax and pacing
Liam O’Brien, who plays Vax, described the challenge as preserving the emotional story between Keyleth and Vax while using hindsight, structure, and pacing the improvised campaign did not have. He said the team wanted “to give it the life and the heart that it had in our game, but also help use it to tell the bigger story.” The remark supports describing a deliberate adaptation, not attributing a particular reaction to him.

Did the change make the cast sad?
The available on-record interview comments do not confirm that the cast was sad about Vax’s altered arc. GeekChamp’s article attributes emotional reactions and recording-session anecdotes to cast members, but those details—including claims about losing “a piece of Vax’s soul” and saying goodbye to Vax again—are not corroborated by the accessible interviews. Without a direct, attributable source for those statements, they should be treated as unverified rather than repeated as fact.
A September 27, 2024 TV Insider cast interview also discusses adapting the campaign for animation and reaching a wider audience; it does not document the headline’s specific sadness claim. A WIRED cast Q&A, published October 24, 2024, identifies the series as an adaptation of Critical Role’s first campaign and notes that Season 3 was then available on Prime Video. Neither source confirms the alleged reaction.

How the animated season differs from a tabletop campaign
The interviews support a careful comparison of storytelling approaches, not a definitive inventory of which campaign scenes were removed. Tabletop play can unfold through improvisation over time; an animated season must shape events into a finite episode structure. In discussing that process, the cast described making room for relationships, adding intimate conversations, and adjusting pacing to serve a larger story.
Prime Video lists Season 3 as 12 episodes and dates episodes 1–3 to October 3, 2024. Its episode summaries place the season amid the Chroma Conclave conflict and describe a later “terrible loss.” Those official details establish the season’s format and broad story context, but do not verify the cast’s feelings about Vax’s arc.
