Ardhanarishvara is Shiva shown in a single divine body that joins masculine and feminine aspects. In her 2022 essay for Scroll.in, art historian Alka Pande uses a Shiva Purana creation account to explain how this form can signify both unity and difference. Her interpretation is one account of the myth, not a universal or uncontested origin story.
What is Ardhanarishvara?
The name Ardhanarishvara is commonly rendered as “the Lord who is half woman.” The image presents Shiva and the feminine divine—identified in Pande’s account with Parvati—in one body, conventionally divided into a masculine half and a feminine half. Rather than treating the figure as two separate beings placed side by side, Pande describes it as a visual expression of their coalescence.
Pande also calls the form androgynous, and notes that it is often described with historical terms such as “hermaphroditic.” Ardhanarishvara is the more specific religious and iconographic name. Those descriptions of a divine image should not be collapsed into a claim about modern gender identity: Pande’s essay is concerned with religious symbolism, creation and the relation between unity and differentiated forms.
How does Pande explain the creation story?
Pande recounts a version from the Shiva Purana in which Brahma cannot create women. Shiva appears as Ardhanarishvara, with the right side as the male manifestation. Seeing the generative possibility in this joined form, Brahma undertakes penance. Shiva then creates Sati from the left side of his body.

This sequence is Pande’s account of a particular mythic version. She notes that versions differ, so it should not be presented as the sole or definitive origin story of Ardhanarishvara. In her telling, the form makes creation possible by bringing together the differentiated principles that the act of creation will express.
What does the joined form mean in Pande’s interpretation?
Wholeness and differentiation
Pande reads Ardhanarishvara as holding unity and polarity together. The uncreated is beyond fixed male and female attributes; creation, by contrast, takes shape through differentiated forms. The figure therefore makes visible both a prior wholeness and the distinction that emerges within creation.

This is not simply a symbol of two complementary halves. In Pande’s account, the image points to a divine reality that can encompass difference without being reduced to either side. She describes Ardhanarishvara as a principal manifestation of Shiva and writes: “Ardhanarishvara exists without desire.” That sentence belongs to Pande’s essay and reflects its account of the form, rather than a quoted statement by another named figure.
How do the visual contrasts express the idea?
Pande opens her essay with a translated passage from Adi Shankaracharya’s Hargauryashtakam. In the translation she gives, one half of the body bears Gauri’s sandalwood paste, while the other bears Har’s cremation-ground ash. One ear has a beautiful ornament; the other, a snake ornament. The opposing details make the union legible: distinct attributes occupy one body.

“The one who (in the form of Gauri) has covered one half of her body till the navel in sandalwood paste and the other half (in the form of Har) with ashes from the shamshan, the one who has worn a manohar kundal (beautiful earring) in one ear and wrapped a sarpa kundal (snake) around another ear, to that Shiva (female-Shivani) and to that Shiva (male-Har) I bow.”
The wording and attribution here follow Pande’s Scroll.in excerpt. They convey how she uses the hymn to introduce Ardhanarishvara’s visual joining of contrasting qualities; they should not be treated as a critically verified edition of the Sanskrit hymn.

Pande also describes Ardhanarishvara as the first wholly anthropomorphic presentation of Shiva in the narrative she recounts. That is a claim within her essay’s account, not a complete chronology of the image’s development. The excerpt does not establish a period-by-period history or a regional survey of particular sculptures, so it cannot support broader claims about when or where specific forms first appeared.

Pande develops the subject at book length in Ardhanarishvara, the Androgyne: Probing the Gender Within. Google Books describes it as an illustrated 189-page art book, published by Rupa & Company in 2004, with Indian art and South Asian history among its subjects. That bibliographic description identifies the book; it does not establish current availability.
