Shawn Michaels later reportedly traced his lasting eye problem to a bump in a match with Kane. A review of an interview with Bret Hart says Michaels described the bump as weakening a muscle that held his eye in place, and said he chose not to have surgery. That account is separate from WWE’s 2008 storyline, which blamed a detached-retina injury on Chris Jericho sending Michaels into the Jeri-Tron 6000.
What Michaels reportedly said caused the eye problem
A review of extras from WWE Greatest Rivalries: Shawn vs. Bret says Michaels told Bret Hart that a bump during a match with Kane weakened a muscle holding his eye in place. The review also says Michaels could have had surgery but did not think it was necessary. 411MANIA’s review is a secondary summary, not a transcript or medical record; it does not give a verbatim quotation or identify the match date.
So the best-supported answer is that Michaels reportedly attributed the lasting eye issue to that Kane-match bump. The source does not establish a clinical diagnosis or independently verify the precise anatomy, and it does not establish his current vision or treatment status.
Why WWE viewers may remember a different cause
In 2008, WWE presented another explanation on television. Its injury article said Chris Jericho sent Michaels face-first into the glass of the Jeri-Tron 6000, causing a detached retina, and that the injury was aggravated during their match at The Great American Bash. WWE’s contemporaneous injury article documents the storyline and its promotional injury framing; it does not establish the original cause of Michaels’s lasting eye appearance.

The two accounts differ in both source and scope: the later Kane account is a reviewer’s summary of Michaels’s reported recollection about the lasting problem, while the Jericho account is WWE’s 2008 on-screen storyline about a detached retina and its aggravation. A detached retina and a weakened eye muscle are not interchangeable diagnoses.
Is “lazy eye” a medical diagnosis here?
“Lazy eye” is a familiar colloquial description, but the available accounts do not establish that Michaels has amblyopia, confirm the exact structure involved, or provide a current medical assessment. The 2008 WWE article used “detached retina” in its storyline; the later review describes a weakened muscle. Neither source is a clinical record, so it is more accurate to describe this as Michaels’s reported explanation and WWE’s storyline rather than a confirmed medical history.

The reported discussion appears in extras associated with WWE Greatest Rivalries: Shawn vs. Bret. WWE’s 2015 interview also identifies Michaels’s autobiography, Wrestling for My Life: The Legend, the Reality and the Faith of a WWE Superstar, as a book about his faith and later life; that interview does not present the autobiography as a source on his eye injury. WWE’s interview about the book names it and noted its retail availability at the time of publication.
