Pedro Pascal wore Conner Ives’s “Protect the Dolls” T-shirt to the London premiere of Thunderbolts in April 2025. The slogan expresses support for trans women; “dolls” is affectionate language used in some LGBTQ+ communities, though it is not a term every trans woman uses for herself. What began as a one-off runway statement became a fundraiser, and its beneficiary has since changed.
Who made the shirt, and where did it begin?
Fashion designer Conner Ives made the first “Protect the Dolls” shirt for the finale of his Fall 2025 show at London Fashion Week in February 2025. According to Vogue, he created it the night before the show, using heat-transfer paper on a white T-shirt. The original idea was a one-off statement for the runway.
Vogue reported that an early version read “We <3 the Dolls.” Ives chose “Protect the Dolls” because he wanted wording that got more directly to the point. He described the underlying principle to GQ: “Protection for our trans friends should be a given, not a political movement.”
What does “Protect the Dolls” mean?
The slogan calls for the safety and support of trans women. “Dolls” is an affectionate term used in LGBTQ+ contexts, particularly in reference to trans women, but language varies: it should not be treated as a label every trans woman uses for herself. In this shirt’s context, Ives used it as a warm, direct expression of solidarity.
Why did Pedro Pascal wear it?
Interest in the shirt grew after public figures wore it, and Ives opened a pre-order. Vogue reported that Pascal obtained his shirt through stylist Julie Ragolia and wore it at the London premiere of Thunderbolts in April 2025. Other notable wearers included Troye Sivan, who wore one at Coachella, as well as Haider Ackermann and Tilda Swinton.

How did the shirt become a fundraiser?
Public attention turned the runway design into a charity campaign. Fundraising reports from 2025 give dated snapshots, not a current running total:
- Vogue reported that 1,088 shirts had sold and more than $70,000 had been donated after production, shipping and fulfillment costs by April 13, 2025.
- GQ later reported Ives saying the campaign had raised over $300,000 by April 25, 2025.
Those figures reflect different reporting dates and should not be combined or read as the campaign’s present total.

Which charity benefits from the shirt now?
The beneficiary changed in 2026. Conner Ives’s Protect the Dolls T-shirt listing, accessed October 8, 2026, says all proceeds go directly to Not A Phase, a UK-based trans-led charity, from February 1, 2026. It also says 100% of profits went to Trans Lifeline through January 31, 2026, with the final sum still pending calculation and expected to exceed £446,387.43. That is a stated expectation, not a final confirmed total.
The same listing gives the shirt’s price as £75 and describes it as 100% organic cotton, printed in the UK, with sizes XS through XXL. What does the wider context show?
The slogan’s call for protection sits against a measurable but limited indicator of harm. The UK Home Office recorded 4,780 transgender hate crimes in England and Wales in the year ending March 2024. This is a police-recorded count, not an estimate of all hate crimes experienced: the Home Office cautions that not every hate crime is reported to police.
