A January 2024 Rolling Stone report described fan accounts and the #FreeSebastian hashtag growing around him, even as protesters said their purpose was to warn tourists about the church. The story does not establish what Sebastian wanted or what happened to him afterward.
How the protest videos became a story about Sebastian
The events in Rolling Stone’s account took place outside the Church of Scientology Information Center on Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles. Los Angeles content creators livestreamed and posted footage of the protests. William Gude, who runs the LAPD watchdog page @FilmThePoliceLA, said his interest began after an encounter with a security guard. Protest participant Jessica Palmadessa said the effort aimed to warn tourists before they entered the church.
As footage circulated, viewers focused on a staffer identified only as Sebastian. Comments about his appearance helped prompt fan accounts and the #FreeSebastian hashtag. The report said he generally ignored protesters, though he sometimes engaged on camera. Those observations do not reveal his private wishes, his views about the church, or whether he wanted the attention.
Why the online attention divided the protesters
For Palmadessa and Gude, the attention risked pulling viewers away from the stated purpose of warning passersby. Palmadessa put the irony this way: “Sebastian’s one of the best recruiters on the Boulevard.” The line captures how a protest could attract attention to the person working at the center while distracting from the organizers’ message.

Gude objected to viewers treating speculation as a reason to intervene: “They’ve created their own fantasies about why he’s there and why he does not want to be there, and how they have to help him. It’s truly unhealthy.” His concern, as reported, was about assumptions and imagined rescue narratives—not evidence of what Sebastian wanted.
Steven Hassan, introduced in the report as a licensed mental health counselor specializing in cults, raised a related concern about personal boundaries: “I’m worried about people using this poor person who is not asking to be an internet celebrity and invading his life.” His assessment was not proof of Sebastian’s wishes. The report likewise quotes former Scientologist Liz Gale saying that the attention could put him in a difficult position within the church; it does not establish that this happened.

Competing accounts of the protest tactics
The report records disagreement over how to characterize the videos and the attention around Sebastian. Church spokesperson Karin Pouw described the videos as harassment and rejected the framing of the attention as affection. She said: “What you call ‘affection’ is the hate speech of a member of a hate group who professes to want to ‘stop people from Sebastian’ and ‘cancel him out,’” she says.
Protesters denied or expressed concern about aspects of the tactics, according to the report. These are competing characterizations, not an adjudicated finding about the protests or their effects. The story’s tension is easier to understand by separating the questions involved:

What the reported view count does—and does not—show
Rolling Stone reported that a compilation of protest footage had nearly 18 million views at the time of its January 2024 reporting. That is a time-bound figure for the compilation, not a current count and not a measure of what happened to the protests or hashtag afterward.

The account identifies him only by his first name. It does not establish his motives, whether he wanted to leave the church, whether he welcomed the attention, or his later circumstances. The report also uses “body router” as a description attributed to an informed source, not as a confirmed job title; Pouw did not answer the article’s question about that alleged role.

The report offers a snapshot of a viral moment and the arguments surrounding it, not a verified account of his current status.
