Rob McElhenney said he deliberately gained weight to make Mac look less conventionally attractive in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s seventh season. The amount depends on when he was asked: 2011 coverage put the change at about 50 pounds, while McElhenney recalled gaining 60 pounds in four months in a 2013 Reddit AMA. He described eating doughnuts, fast food and weight-gainer shakes; those were his reported choices for a comic role, not a safe or recommended weight-gain plan.
Why did Rob McElhenney gain weight for It’s Always Sunny?
The change was a deliberate comedy choice, not a conventional fitness transformation. McElhenney said he had noticed sitcom characters often seemed to become more attractive as shows continued. He wanted Mac to go in the opposite direction. In a 2011 interview with TV Guide, he described the goal this way: “I tried to look as ugly as possible, basically.” The heavier look became part of Mac’s appearance in season seven.
How much weight did he say he gained?
Contemporary reports and McElhenney’s later recollection give different figures. They should be read as accounts made at different times, not combined into a single exact measurement.
| Account | Reported amount | What it says |
|---|---|---|
| TheWrap interview, August 10, 2011 | About 50 pounds; McElhenney said he went from 160 to 212 pounds | Contemporary account of the change for the show. |
| TV Guide interview, August 6, 2011 | About 50 pounds | Contemporary coverage of his role-driven transformation. |
| Reddit AMA transcript, October 16, 2013 | 60 pounds in four months | McElhenney’s later recollection in response to a question about how he gained the weight. |
The available accounts do not resolve why the numbers differ. The most accurate summary is that 2011 reporting described roughly 50 pounds, while McElhenney later recalled 60 pounds over four months.

What did he say he ate to gain it?
In the 2013 AMA, McElhenney said he ate a lot and named doughnuts, fast food and weight-gainer shakes. That is a short description of what he said he did, not a full dietary record: the transcript does not establish quantities, a complete meal plan or medical guidance for each choice. Because the gain was pursued for an exaggerated screen appearance, these details should not be treated as a practical template.
In the same AMA, he said he had tried to gain 100 pounds but that his doctor stopped him. The transcript does not give a diagnosis or a complete account of medical supervision, so it cannot establish more than that brief recollection.

How quickly did he say he lost weight afterward?
In TheWrap’s August 10, 2011 interview, McElhenney said he lost 23 pounds in one month after filming, by reducing how much he ate and working out three times a week. He also quipped: “Losing it is easy. You just stop eating so f—ing much.” The remark is an irreverent quote in an interview, not health advice. That account describes an initial month of weight loss; it does not document the full timeline to his later physique.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What can—and can’t—be concluded from his account?
- Established by his public accounts: he intentionally changed his appearance for Mac, named several foods and shakes he used while gaining, and described an initial month of weight loss after filming.
- Not established by these accounts: a single agreed-upon exact gain, a complete diet or exercise regimen, the full duration of his later weight loss, or a diagnosis and detailed medical history.
His story is best understood as a role-specific comic transformation described in interviews, not as evidence that rapid weight change is safe, easy or appropriate for other people.
