Richard Marx has said he did not expect to start dating soon after separating from his first wife of 25 years. Daisy Fuentes, meanwhile, had built a life on her own and was wary of committing to someone who had only recently separated. In a joint podcast, they described a connection that included a break before they found their way back to each other—not a direct leap from meeting to marriage.
Why neither was looking to rush into a relationship
In a joint appearance on Whine Down with Jana Kramer, Marx recalled being in a difficult period after his separation. He said he was dealing with its effects on his family and did not expect to begin dating right away: “I really thought I would be single for a while.” His account describes his own circumstances, not a general rule about how people feel after divorce. The couple’s conversation was published in 2026.

Fuentes described a different but equally cautious starting point. She had been single for a while, had established a life of her own, and was not actively seeking a husband. She was hesitant about entering a long-term relationship with someone who had only recently separated. Their recollections show that the timing mattered to both of them, though for different reasons.
How the relationship developed
Marx and Fuentes recalled an early connection followed by time apart and a later reconnection. The podcast’s title—“Why They Had to Break Up Before Saying I Do”—frames that pause as part of the story. Their accounts present the relationship as non-linear: attraction did not immediately resolve their different levels of readiness.
#1 Best Overall
The conversation does not establish an exact date for when they first met or began dating. It does make clear that, in their telling, the period apart came before their eventual commitment. Neither partner’s recollection needs to be treated as more authoritative than the other’s: together, they describe a relationship shaped by emotional timing and caution.
From reconnection to marriage
Fuentes later spoke about Marx as the love of her life. In an interview published April 30, 2020, People en Español quoted her saying, “Encontré el amor de mi vida hace solo seis años” (“I found the love of my life just six years ago”). That is her personal recollection in that interview, not an independently established date for when the couple first met.

The same interview reported that Marx and Fuentes married in Aspen, Colorado, in December 2015. Years later, Marx described their closeness in an interview with Argentina’s LA NACION, saying they had agreed not to be apart for more than a couple of days. That statement reflects what he said at the time of that interview; it should not be read as confirmation of a current routine. Read the LA NACION interview.

The couple’s own account is the clearest basis for explaining how their relationship began: Marx was adjusting to the end of a long marriage, Fuentes was protective of the independent life she had built, and a connection that paused later resumed. Their story does not establish a universal timetable for dating after divorce, nor does it show that a breakup is necessary for a relationship to succeed. It is their account of how this particular relationship unfolded.

For additional context about their life together, AARP’s 2025 interview with Marx discusses his life and marriage but is not a detailed chronology of the couple’s beginnings. In a January 2026 LA NACION interview, Marx also reflected on the period after his prior marriage.
