Rey Mysterio has wrestled without his mask before. He lost it during his WCW career in 1999, then returned to WWE wearing it again. That history answers the question more accurately than treating an old image or a scripted WWE segment as a new reveal. Mysterio is Óscar Gutiérrez; the sources below document his unmasking, but do not verify a particular current photograph.
Has Rey Mysterio ever appeared unmasked?
Yes. In a 2022 interview with TV Insider, Mysterio recalled losing his mask at WCW’s SuperBrawl 1999. He said the decision was difficult at first, but later saw it as an opportunity to wrestle larger opponents. Recalling the transition, he described it as “a new beginning for Rey Mysterio as an unmasked luchador.”
That answers whether he has been seen without the mask; it does not establish that a recent photo or reveal has occurred. The interview identifies him as Óscar Gutiérrez, but it is not an authentication or description of any particular image.
Why did he return to wearing the mask?
Mysterio returned to WWE wearing his mask. In the same TV Insider interview, he explained that the mask supported the character’s presentation as a smaller wrestler taking on larger opponents. He also said fans respected his return to the mask even though they knew who he was.

The mask is more than a disguise in WWE’s account of his career. The official WWE biography places him in the Mexican tradition of lucha libre and describes him as hiding his face under a mask. WWE lists him as a 2023 Hall of Fame inductee and records his Royal Rumble victory and championship history.
Do WWE unmasking segments mean he has just revealed his face?
No. An unmasking scene in WWE programming can be part of a scripted storyline, not evidence of a new real-life event. WWE’s August 19, 2019 Raw recap describes Dominick stopping a ceremonial self-unmasking and persuading Rey to keep the mask. A WWE video listing dated September 8, 2025 likewise teases a mask-related question as a storyline.

Those WWE items concern on-screen angles. They should not be presented as proof that Mysterio has newly appeared unmasked outside the story.
What can a photo really tell you?
A photo needs context before it can support a claim about a recent reveal. Check its date and source, and distinguish a real-life appearance from a scripted segment. The text sources documenting Mysterio’s mask history do not authenticate a specific current unmasked photograph. If an article or documentary uses an image of his face, it should be authorized, verified, dated, and captioned accurately—not passed off as breaking news.

What has Mysterio said about carrying masks?
In a GQ 10 Essentials video released May 14, 2025, Mysterio said, “So I always gotta carry two masks with me.” He explained that he sometimes carries two to four, depending on how many days he is on the road. That is his personal travel practice, not a general statistic about wrestlers or mask use.
