The Associated Press reported that he died at a Los Angeles hospital after cardiac arrest. His career ranged from the landmark Simon album No Secrets to recordings by Harry Nilsson, the Pointer Sisters, Barbra Streisand and Rod Stewart.
What was Richard Perry’s role on “You’re So Vain”?
Perry produced Carly Simon’s 1972 Elektra album No Secrets, which includes “You’re So Vain.” Simon’s official album page describes No Secrets as a blockbuster that spent five weeks at No. 1 in the United States and identifies “You’re So Vain” as a US No. 1 single. Those chart descriptions are from the album page, rather than an independent chart check. Carly Simon’s official No Secrets page
In his memoir, Perry said the song was based on a composite of several men Simon had dated, with Warren Beatty the primary inspiration, according to the AP. That is Perry’s account, not a definitive or exhaustive statement of Simon’s intent. Associated Press obituary
A career across pop and other styles
Perry’s credits crossed genres and generations. The AP highlights Harry Nilsson’s “Without You,” Tiny Tim’s “Tiptoe Through the Tulips,” the Pointer Sisters’ “I’m So Excited,” and Willie Nelson and Julio Iglesias’s recording of “To All the Girls I’ve Loved Before.” Later work included the Pointer Sisters’ “Neutron Dance,” DeBarge’s “Rhythm of the Night,” and Rod Stewart’s The Great American Songbook albums. The AP characterized Perry as a “musician’s producer,” describing him as someone who treated artists as peers rather than as vehicles for his own tastes. The Guardian reported that Perry thought of himself as “a coach rather than a director of music,” and that Simon described him as a close collaborator in her 2015 memoir. Perry’s own memoir, Cloud Nine: Memoirs of a Record Producer (2020), expressed the pleasure he took in hearing a finished track match the sound he had imagined: “There is no greater turn-on than to hear a track played back in the control room and to have it sound the way you heard it in your dreams.” The Guardian obituary
