777 Charlie took shape around a filmmaking problem: how do you build scripted scenes around a dog whose actions cannot be timed like a human actor’s? Actor-producer Rakshit Shetty and director Kiranraj K have described years of research and training, a three-year shoot and the patient work of earning Charlie’s attention. Their accounts show how the production’s practical demands became part of the story of Dharma and the dog who changes his life.
How did 777 Charlie happen?
Kiranraj K said the idea began in 2017, when he was an associate director on Kirik Party. Seeing a mother dog and her puppies playing gave him the starting point for a film about the bond between humans and animals. He first pitched the premise to actor Aravinnd Iyer, who later withdrew because of scheduling and the extra time required for puppy training. Shetty then took the lead role while producing the film, according to Kiranraj’s interview with Silverscreen India.
The preparation was unusually extended. Kiranraj said he spent one and a half years researching dog behaviour and the dog–human relationship while developing the script. That was followed by two and a half years of workshops to prepare the dogs and Shetty. He described his total commitment to the film as four and a half years.
Preparation versus shooting
The two filmmakers gave closely related but not identical accounts of the shoot’s length. Shetty told Scroll.in they shot for 167 days across three years. Kiranraj told Silverscreen India the production filmed approximately 160–170 days between 2018 and 2020. Both describe a production whose preparation and shooting stretched over years, rather than a short shoot preceded by routine animal handling.

What were the filmmaking challenges?
Shetty said that he could not rely on Charlie to respond to his performance in a predictable way. Sometimes the dog would perform while Shetty’s take fell short; at other times, Shetty was ready but the dog was not. He said a single shot could take 30–40 takes, and that the repetition tested his patience. “I had to give my best in every take but we wouldn’t know when and how Charlie would perform,” he told Scroll.in.
To encourage specific behaviour, the crew used rewards and prompts. Shetty recalled applying fish oil to his face for a licking scene, and hiding dog biscuits in his mouth or fingers to encourage Charlie to look at him. He said the team listed approximately 450 tricks for the dogs to learn, with 20–30 taught before each shooting schedule. These are Shetty’s recollections of this production, not independently audited figures.

Training dogs for a scripted role
Kiranraj said finding a trainer willing to take on the work was difficult: others backed out before Pramod agreed to train the dogs and commit for three years. The team first trained the dogs individually, then held combined workshops with Shetty and the dog so they could work together. Kiranraj said visual effects were used in some scenes and transitions, but not for Charlie’s scenes.
The accounts describe the canine cast from different angles. Shetty said one grown dog portrayed 80% of Charlie, with another dog and two puppies also used. Kiranraj said a puppy played younger Charlie and a grown dog the older version; he also said the team adopted four dogs, two of whom acted in the film. Those details are best understood as separate descriptions of the dogs’ roles and the production’s wider group, rather than a single reconciled count.

Where was 777 Charlie filmed?
The interview accounts provide different location lists, so they do not establish one definitive route. Scroll.in lists Goa, Maharashtra, coastal Karnataka, Punjab, Rajasthan, Shimla and Kashmir. Kiranraj’s Silverscreen India interview lists Mysore, Goa, Kodaikanal, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Kashmir. The overlap points to a production spread across several regions of India, while the differences should remain attributed to each account.

Shetty told The Times of India, “I choose to produce a film only when I am completely convinced about the script.” He said he related to aspects of Dharma’s introversion and was intrigued by the way a dog’s arrival changes the character. Playing Dharma also led Shetty to question some of his own decisions and reflect on them.

Shetty also singled out the connection Kiranraj made between Dharma’s journey and the Mahabharata story of Yudhishthira walking toward heaven with a dog beside him. Kiranraj separately described that epic association as an inspiration for the film, alongside its focus on trust and loyalty between a human and a dog. The production’s difficult, unscriptable moments and the story’s emotional bond meet in that central contrast: Dharma’s journey can be written, but Charlie’s performance had to be earned take by take.
