What Pornhub actually launched
In March 2016, Pornhub added a dedicated virtual-reality category in partnership with BaDoinkVR, an adult-VR producer and subscription service. The launch presented VR material as a way for viewers to look around a scene rather than watch from a fixed camera position.
Contemporary coverage described the Pornhub offering as free VR videos and trailers. That wording is important. The partnership did not mean that every VR production was free, that every video was fully interactive, or that BaDoinkVR’s broader library was included at no cost. 180 degrees, 360 degrees, and ordinary browser playback
“VR video” was not one single format. The 2016 category included both 180-degree and 360-degree material.
- 180-degree video shows a wide field in front of the viewer. It can feel immersive when viewed through a headset, but it does not allow the viewer to look completely around the scene.
- 360-degree video records the surrounding environment, allowing the viewer to look in every direction. It is the format most people associate with spherical VR video.
- Browser playback does not require a headset. A viewer can drag around the video window with a mouse or finger to inspect different parts of a 360-degree scene, although that is less immersive than head-tracked viewing.
As a result, it would be inaccurate to describe the entire launch as full 360-degree interactive content. Early reporting noted that some material was 180-degree, and the experience depended heavily on the individual video, camera placement, display quality, and viewing hardware.
Which devices worked at the time?
The original launch was designed to support several levels of VR hardware:

There is a current-shopping caveat: Google stopped selling its official Cardboard viewer in 2021. Third-party products still use the Cardboard-style concept, but they are not necessarily Google-branded or equally comfortable. Readers looking for the type of inexpensive hardware associated with the 2016 launch can compare a Google Cardboard VR viewer or other smartphone VR viewer, checking the listing carefully for phone dimensions, lens adjustment, Android or iPhone compatibility, and ventilation.
A cardboard-style viewer is best understood today as a legacy or low-cost smartphone VR option. It can demonstrate the basic idea, but it is not equivalent to a modern standalone headset in image quality, tracking, comfort, controllers, or software support.
Why the early experience was uneven

A phone placed close to the viewer’s eyes magnified flaws in resolution and stitching. Those criticisms describe the early products and footage examined at the time—not every later VR video or every current headset. The quality of immersive video varies with camera resolution, stitching, lighting, compression, field of view, and whether the production was shot for 180-degree or 360-degree viewing.
What the partnership meant for the VR industry
The important part of the story was distribution. Adult VR existed before Pornhub’s announcement, but Pornhub placed a dedicated category on a high-traffic adult-video site and connected it to hardware that many smartphone owners could try cheaply.

That lowered two barriers at once:
- Discovery: people did not need to find a specialist VR producer before encountering the format.
- Hardware: people could experiment with a phone-based viewer instead of buying a high-end computer and headset.
This made the launch an early example of adult entertainment helping bring an emerging consumer technology to a wider audience. It is fair to say the partnership helped normalize VR as a consumer format for Pornhub’s audience. It is less defensible to claim that pornography single-handedly drove VR adoption or that it caused the technology’s success. How the original setup differs from VR today

Access should be limited to adults where legal, and viewers should follow the laws and platform rules applicable in their location. Headsets can cause eye strain, nausea, dizziness, or discomfort; taking breaks and stopping when symptoms appear is sensible. A clear physical play area is also important for modern tracked headsets, while phone viewers should be used in a seated, stable position rather than while walking.
