Ruth Tarvydas’s family remembered the Perth designer as “one of its most beautiful and eccentric lights.” In September 2014, several months after her death, the Telstra Perth Fashion Festival honoured her with a runway show featuring 47 gowns from her career. The tribute celebrated a designer whose work reached an international market while her fashion business remained rooted in Perth.
What Tarvydas’s family remembered
In a statement reported by PerthNow on 18 May 2014, her family described Tarvydas not only as a successful designer but as a sister and aunt whose personality and creative work were inseparable. They called her “one of its most beautiful and eccentric lights” and wrote: “She was both an artisan at work and herself a work of art and we, like many others, marvelled at the success of Ruth and our late brother Harvey’s determination.”
The family also said they were proud of her professional achievements, which they believed had paved the way for young Australian designers. They took comfort in the thought that “the legacy of our darling Ruthie will live on for many years to come in our memories and in her designs.” The statement joined personal grief to a recognition of her influence and the work she left behind.
Who Ruth Tarvydas was
The Western Australian Museum’s collection account describes Tarvydas as a Perth-based designer with a 46-year career. She began making clothes while employed as a legal secretary, established the Ruta label, and in 1968 opened a youth-focused boutique with her brother Harvey.

A Perth business with international reach
Tarvydas built an international fashion business from Perth. The museum records that she became the first Australian to export designs internationally in 1980. By the 2000s, it says, her designs were sold in 170 outlets across 16 countries. Those are historical figures, not present-day outlet counts.
The museum credits her decision to operate internationally from Perth with helping clear a path for later designers and contributing to the wider local fashion industry. Her career therefore connected two scales: a boutique that gave young Western Australians access to locally made, internationally influenced clothing, and a label that reached overseas customers.

How the festival tribute unfolded
Festival director Mariella Harvey-Hanrahan announced that the planned commemorative show would recognise Tarvydas’s contribution and lifetime achievements. She also hoped the event would draw attention to people suffering in silence, saying: “The festival would also like this moment to serve as an opportunity to raise awareness and give a voice to those suffering in silence.”
The tribute, titled Ruth Tarvydas — A Celebration, took place at Ascot Racecourse in September 2014. PerthNow’s event coverage reported that 670 people attended and that 47 gowns represented Tarvydas’s career. Rebecca Judd opened the show; the well-known red dress from 2004 brought it to a close. Afterward, Tarvydas’s older sister Hilde Grey said, “Ruth would have loved it.”

Where to explore her work
The Western Australian Museum says its holdings form the largest and most comprehensive museum collection of Tarvydas designs. Its collection page provides an institutional account of her career and preserves garments as part of that legacy.
A different perspective came from The House of Tarvydas, a retrospective exhibition at Curtin University’s John Curtin Gallery, which ran from 22 August to 10 October 2008. In its 2008 announcement, Curtin described the exhibition as a thorough examination of Western Australian fashion. Curator Anne Farren highlighted Tarvydas’s role in local design and global export. Curtin also confirmed that exhibition catalogues were produced; current availability is not established.
