Netflix did not ban people who live together from sharing an account. Its policy limits each account to one primary household and asks people watching from another home to pay for an extra-member slot or open their own account. Profile Transfer, device management and temporary travel verification are intended to make that change less disruptive.
The policy is now broadly implemented. Netflix began notifying U.S. members on May 23, 2023, and describes paid sharing as an established part of its business model.

The short version
- One Netflix account is intended for the people and devices at the account’s main residence.
- Someone living elsewhere generally needs a separate account or an eligible Extra Member invitation.
- Profile Transfer can carry viewing history, recommendations, My List, settings and saved games to the new arrangement.
- Travelers can request temporary access; that is not a permanent solution for a second household.
- Extra Member eligibility depends on country, plan and billing provider.
What Netflix announced and when
Netflix identified account use outside the paying household as a growth and monetization problem. It first tested paid-sharing approaches in Chile, Costa Rica and Peru, then announced tools for a primary Netflix Household, paid extra members, profile transfers and access management. The $7.99 figure was a U.S. launch price from May 2023, not a reliable current price. Netflix says plans and prices can change; check the offer shown in the account’s live plan flow.

What Netflix Household means
Netflix says a Household is the collection of devices connected to the internet at the main place where the account holder watches Netflix. It is normally established from a television or TV-connected streaming device using the home internet connection and related account activity.
Netflix says it uses signals including IP address, device IDs and account activity, and says it does not collect GPS data to determine a device’s precise physical location. The company has not published a universal Wi-Fi radius or a single number of days that automatically determines membership.
A Household therefore is not every relative who has ever used the password, every device registered to the account, or a worldwide travel pass. Family members who live together can continue using separate profiles on one account.

Open a separate Netflix account
An independent account provides separate billing, login control and a clean long-term arrangement for someone who has moved out. Start at Netflix’s signup page. If preserving the old profile matters, transfer it before or during the move.

Use an Extra Member slot
In many countries, an account owner on an eligible Standard or Premium plan can purchase an Extra Member slot and invite someone outside the household. The extra member receives a separate login, password and profile, but the account owner remains responsible for the charge.
- Extra Members cannot be added to ad-supported plans.
- Some telecommunications, cable and other partner-billed packages do not support the feature.
- The invitee generally must activate in the same country where the owner created the account.
- Slot limits and prices vary by country and package; Netflix’s 2023 announcement described different limits in different markets.
Check the current rules at Netflix’s Extra Member help page rather than relying on the historical U.S. launch price.
Transfer the existing profile
Profile Transfer can move viewing history, recommendations, My List, saved games, settings and related profile information to a new account or Extra Member arrangement. It is usually preferable to abandoning years of personalization or continuing to use someone else’s password from another home.
How Netflix handles travel and temporary use
Netflix does not say that every login away from home is immediately blocked. Depending on the device, location and account status, it may request verification, offer temporary access, ask the owner to update the Household or present an account-creation option.

For a blocked television or TV-connected device, choose I’m Traveling or Watch Temporarily when displayed. Netflix sends a one-time code to the account owner by email or text; enter it on the device within 15 minutes. Netflix recommends opening the app on the home Wi-Fi at least once a month to reduce interruptions during travel. This process is designed for hotels, trips and temporary absences, not for maintaining a permanent second household.
Fixing a wrong Household or blocked home TV
- From the Netflix home screen on the television, press the remote’s Back button (or the Menu button on Apple TV).
- Open Get Help or Settings.
- Select Manage Netflix Household, then Update Netflix Household.
- Choose Send Email or, where available, Send Text.
- Open the verification link and select Yes, This Was Me, then Confirm Update. The link expires after 15 minutes.
Use the preferred home internet connection for this process. If the problem continues, review recently active devices, sign out unfamiliar equipment or choose Sign out of All Devices, then repeat the update. When troubleshooting, keep the television and the phone or computer used for verification on the same home network. Netflix’s full procedure is at Household troubleshooting help.
If the member never watches Netflix on a television or TV-connected device, Netflix says a Household may not need to be established. The enforcement experience is therefore not simply a blanket block on every phone or laptop outside the home.

Common situations
Relatives in different homes
Being related does not make two residences one Household. The practical choices are an eligible Extra Member slot, a separate account or temporary travel verification.

College students
A student living away may encounter verification, especially on a dorm-room television. Netflix does not promise permanent family-account access for this situation; use temporary access when traveling, an eligible Extra Member slot or an independent account.
Vacation homes
A second residence can appear as a separate internet location. It may require verification or a Household update and is not automatically covered simply because it belongs to the same family.
Hotels and friends’ homes
Use the temporary code flow rather than changing the Household from a hotel or another person’s television. If an unfamiliar television causes later confusion, review active devices and reset the Household from the primary home connection.

Multiple Wi-Fi networks
Netflix says a home with several networks or external IP addresses can sometimes lead it to associate only one connection with the Household. Consolidating the troubleshooting session on the main connection and updating the Household there is the official recovery path.

Moving within or outside the country
For a move within the same country, Netflix says the member may need to update the Household. For a permanent move to another country, Netflix generally requires canceling and signing up again because prices, currencies, payment methods and catalogs differ. Netflix says viewing activity can remain available for 24 months after closure, so a returning customer can continue where they left off. See Netflix’s moving guidance.

No. These are separate controls:
- Registered devices: devices that have signed in; Netflix does not describe a simple plan-wide cap on how many can be added.
- Simultaneous streams: the number of screens that can watch at once, generally one to four depending on the plan.
- Household membership: where the account is intended to be used.
- Extra Member slots: paid places for eligible people outside the Household.

Why Netflix made the change
Netflix’s announcements and investor communications describe paid sharing as a way to convert unpaid borrowers into direct subscribers or paying Extra Members. That explains the design: restrict routine use from another home while offering a paid continuation and tools that preserve a person’s profile. It does not establish that every subscriber increase or cancellation was caused by the policy alone.

Bottom line
Netflix ended the assumption that one account could be freely used from multiple homes without another payment. It did not end household sharing: people who live together can still use profiles on one account. Someone who lives elsewhere must now choose the legitimate path available in their market—an Extra Member slot, a separate subscription or temporary travel verification.
