Ne Zha 2 does not leave the original film’s underdog message behind. It carries that story into a larger conflict and gives more weight to identity, confidence, friendship and sacrifice. The result is a broader thematic emphasis—not one definitive moral that replaces the first film’s.
What is Ne Zha 2 about?
The 2019 film introduced Ne Zha as a child feared because of his unusual nature and power, yet determined to resist a fate imposed on him. A24 describes him as a rebellious boy born to mortal parents, with uncontrolled powers and a threat to humanity ahead of him (A24’s film page).

The sequel begins with Ne Zha and Ao Bing surviving heavenly lightning as souls, while their bodies face dissolution. Taiyi Zhenren uses the Seven-Colored Lotus to rebuild their physical forms. Their survival and relationship unfold amid trials and a larger struggle involving the Dragon King and a celestial conspiracy, according to a plot summary from the Hunan provincial government (Hunan government summary, February 15, 2025).
How is the sequel’s message different?
The underdog story remains
The continuity is important: both films center on a character resisting an unfair fate. The Henan provincial government’s comparison of the films describes the 2019 original as a humorous, unconventional take on an unlikely hero confronting destiny. It says the sequel retains that familiar formula rather than abandoning it (Henan government article, February 14, 2025).
#1 Best Overall
The conflict grows beyond one character
In the sequel, the struggle is set against bodily dissolution, demanding trials and forces operating at a celestial scale. That expansion makes the story about more than whether Ne Zha can defy fate: it also asks what happens to his bond with Ao Bing and how characters assert themselves within systems of power. Hunan’s summary highlights defiance, fate and self-confidence; a Macao Government Information Bureau feature identifies friendship, sacrifice, redemption and identity among the film’s themes (Macao Government Information Bureau feature).
Characters and relationships have more room
Henan’s account says the sequel develops its characters more fully and broadens the themes. That supports reading Ne Zha 2 as a shift in emphasis: the first film foregrounds the unlikely hero’s fight against an imposed destiny, while the sequel places that fight within a wider web of relationships, self-belief and power. It does not establish a single moral for either film, and viewers may weigh those themes differently.
Do you need to watch the original first?
No. The Associated Press reported that the sequel gives viewers enough information to follow it even without having seen the first movie (AP interview with Michelle Yeoh). Watching the 2019 film first can still help you recognize the characters’ earlier conflict and appreciate how the sequel develops its premise.
What is Ne Zha 2 based on?
The film is a contemporary reinterpretation of Chinese mythology, loosely based on the sixteenth-century novel Investiture of the Gods, also known as Fengshen Yanyi, according to the Macao government feature. It is one modern adaptation, not the definitive account of Nezha’s story: the figure has accumulated different tellings across Chinese-speaking communities. The novel can offer background, but it should not be mistaken for a direct novelization of the film.

A24 and CMC Pictures worked on an English-language version in which Michelle Yeoh voices Lady Yin, Ne Zha’s mother. In the AP interview, Yeoh said that reading subtitles while following fast-moving animation can compete for a viewer’s attention, particularly for younger audiences. She also noted that translation must preserve meaning while fitting the animation’s timing; poetic folklore and nuance can be difficult to carry across languages.
Yeoh described the themes as “a universal language of family, of love, of the underdog, of someone who’s ostracized, misunderstood just because you’re born different.” That is her interpretation in the AP interview, rather than a definitive statement of what every viewer should take from the film. The AP listed August 22 as the North American opening date for the English-language dub; that is historical release information, not confirmation of current availability.

The Australian Classification Board lists Ne Zha 2 at 144 minutes, rated M in Australia with consumer advice for animated fantasy violence. Its record also notes frenetic battles, blood sprays, revenge, betrayal, grief, corruption, conspiracy, crude humour and brief discreet buttock nudity (Australian Classification Board record). That classification applies to Australia, not other territories.
The AP reported a 143-minute runtime in its interview coverage. Runtime listings can therefore differ by source or version; the Australian figure is the one attached to the board’s local classification record.
Why the sequel became a major hit
Its scale is reflected in reported production figures, though these are attributed estimates rather than independently audited totals. The AP reported five years of production, around 4,000 people from 138 Chinese animation companies, 2,400 animation shots and 1,900 special-effects shots. Separately, the Hunan article quoted Peking University film scholar Chen Xuguang on about 2,000 special-effects shots and contributions from 138 animation studios. The two reports give different shot counts and should not be combined into one figure.
The box-office numbers are also tied to specific dates and definitions. Henan reported that the film passed 10 billion yuan in ticket receipts, including presales and overseas revenue, on the Thursday after its January 29, 2025 debut. In March 2025, the Macao government reported global earnings above US$2 billion. These are historical figures from different reports and measures, not a current total.
