Natalie Portman met Benjamin Millepied while making Black Swan in 2009. Millepied was a dancer and choreographer on the film, and the Los Angeles Times reported that they first met in April. They later married in 2012; their divorce was finalized in France in February 2024, so Millepied is now Portman’s former husband.
They met while working on Black Swan
Their meeting was a work encounter during production of the 2010 film, not a chance meeting at a public event. Portman played a ballet dancer, while Millepied, a New York City Ballet dancer, worked as a dancer and choreographer on the film. The Los Angeles Times described their first meeting in April 2009; Vogue later summarized that Portman met him during the shoot.

The Los Angeles Times also reported that Millepied was concerned about Portman’s abilities when they first met. Portman trained with a coach through the summer production of another film, then met Millepied again in September 2009. Those accounts place an initial meeting in April and later contact during the filmmaking period, without establishing precisely when their relationship began.
From the film set to marriage
By December 2010, Vogue described Millepied as Portman’s boyfriend. That month, ABC News reported, citing Portman’s representative, that the couple were engaged and expecting their first child. They married in 2012. The Associated Press reported that their divorce was finalized in France in February 2024.
