Spoilers for Seasons 3 and 4. At the end of The Lincoln Lawyer Season 3, police find con man Sam Scales shot dead in the trunk of Mickey Haller’s car. The finale does not reveal who killed Sam or how his body got there. Season 4 answers the central question: Alex Gazarian killed Sam and framed Mickey. Mickey is ultimately cleared, but the experience changes him—and Season 4 leaves new family and mob threats for the show’s final season.

What happens at the end of The Lincoln Lawyer Season 3?

Season 3 adapts Michael Connelly’s fifth Mickey Haller novel, The Gods of Guilt, and follows Mickey as he defends Julian La Cosse, who is accused of murdering Gloria “Glory Days” Dayton. The case exposes a scheme involving the Juárez cartel and a gun planted on cartel boss Hector Moya. Corrupt DEA agent James De Marco killed Gloria after she became a threat to that operation, according to Netflix’s Season 3 finale explainer.

Investigator Neil Bishop’s testimony exposes De Marco’s corruption. Bishop says he did not believe De Marco’s claim that Gloria was already dead. After taking the stand, Bishop dies by suicide in court—a devastating turn in the case, not a clue about the identity of the person who later puts Sam in Mickey’s trunk.

Julian is freed, and Mickey and his team secure a settlement. Mickey reconnects with his daughter Hayley, who urges him not to quit: “the system will never work if people don’t make it work.” For a moment, Mickey seems ready to step away from the pressure and take a vacation.

That reset lasts only until police pull over his Lincoln for a missing license plate. They notice what appears to be blood at the back of the car, open the trunk and find Sam Scales, a recurring con man and former client, shot dead inside. The finale ends there. It leaves the killer, the motive and the mechanics of the frame-up unanswered; at that point, viewers cannot know who put Sam in the car or conclude from the scene alone that a particular person framed Mickey.

Why Sam’s body in the trunk matters

The discovery abruptly turns Mickey from a lawyer expecting a break into a man facing a potentially life-destroying accusation. The contrast is the point: he has just helped Julian obtain justice, rebuilt some trust with Hayley and imagined a pause from his chaotic work. Now the evidence appears to connect him to another client’s murder.

In an October 17, 2024 interview with TV Insider, co-showrunner Ted Humphrey said the Sam cliffhanger set up an adaptation of The Law of Innocence. That was creative context at the time, not a statement of the show’s current renewal status. Netflix later described the intended cliffhanger reaction in its Season 3 explainer: Humphrey said, “As far as what it all means, hopefully we will be able to show you in Season 4,” adding that Mickey could only be thinking, “WTF?”

How Season 4 resolves the murder cliffhanger

The Lincoln Lawyer Season 4 premiered on February 5, 2026, and adapts The Law of Innocence. Mickey is no longer defending a client in the central murder case; he is the defendant, accused of killing Sam and forced to prove that he was framed.

Netflix’s Season 4 ending explainer identifies Alex Gazarian, Sam’s partner in a biofuel scam, as Sam’s killer. Gazarian killed him because Sam was skimming money, then framed Mickey. The FBI knew Sam had become an informant but wanted to protect a wider investigation, adding another complication to Mickey’s fight.

Mickey does not end Season 4 convicted or still imprisoned. He rejects a quiet dismissal and insists on public exoneration. The DA’s office drops the charges and clears his record; Mickey agrees to remain silent until the federal case closes. The Sam murder case is resolved, but that does not mean the ordeal simply returns him to his old life.

What the Season 4 ending sets up for Mickey

Co-showrunner Ted Humphrey told Netflix that being wrongfully accused, jailed and forced to fight for his freedom “can’t not change you.” The shift is significant: Mickey has experienced the vulnerability and constraints he usually faces from the other side of the courtroom.

Season 4 also ends with new danger. A woman played by Cobie Smulders tells Mickey she is his sister; a shooting follows, along with a warning that the Armenian mob is still targeting him. The woman’s identity and the full implications of her arrival are part of the next-season setup, not a mystery that Season 4 fully settles.

What is confirmed about The Lincoln Lawyer Season 5?

Netflix announced on May 13, 2026, that Season 5 will be the series’ final season. It is in production, will have 10 episodes and is inspired by Resurrection Walk, Michael Connelly’s seventh Lincoln Lawyer novel. Netflix’s announcement gives no release date.

The announced story introduces Mickey’s previously unknown half-sister Emi Finch, who asks him to help free a wrongfully convicted woman through a habeas petition. Netflix says the season will examine blood ties and buried family secrets. This gives the final season a clear family thread, but it does not independently settle every question raised by the woman who appears at the end of Season 4.

For readers who want to compare the adaptation with its source, Season 3 is based on The Gods of Guilt. As with any screen adaptation, the novel and series may differ in details.
