Musical.ly was not simply renamed overnight. ByteDance acquired Musical.ly in November 2017, after launching TikTok internationally earlier that year. In August 2018, ByteDance merged the two short-form-video services into one global app, and the combined product continued under the TikTok name. Existing Musical.ly users were moved to TikTok with their accounts, videos, and fan connections transferred automatically.

What happened to Musical.ly?

Musical.ly disappeared as a separate mainstream consumer app in August 2018, when it was integrated into TikTok. The change looked like a rebrand to users because the Musical.ly name, logo, and app experience were replaced by TikTok’s branding. But the business and product history was more complicated than a simple name change.

The most accurate summary is:

ByteDance acquired Musical.ly in November 2017 and merged it with TikTok in August 2018. The unified app kept the TikTok name, while Musical.ly users’ accounts, content, and fan bases were migrated automatically.

Musical.ly and TikTok: the timeline

Date Event
2017 ByteDance launched TikTok outside mainland China.
November 2017 ByteDance acquired Musical.ly.
August 1, 2018 The unification of Musical.ly and TikTok was announced in Los Angeles.
August 2018 The two services were combined into a single global app under the TikTok name. Musical.ly users were directed to the upgraded TikTok experience.
February 2019 TikTok discussed a Federal Trade Commission settlement connected to Musical.ly and announced additional age-appropriate safety and privacy measures for younger users in the United States.

The February 2019 regulatory development should not be confused with the rebrand itself. It was a later consequence of the legacy Musical.ly service and part of TikTok’s subsequent safety and privacy response.

Why was Musical.ly merged with TikTok?

Both services centered on short-form mobile video, music, user-created performances, sharing, and discovery. Rather than maintaining two closely related international products, ByteDance combined them into one platform.

In its 2018 announcement, TikTok described the unified app as bringing together the strengths of both services. The new product used TikTok branding and included a redesigned interface, a community-oriented feed, the personalized For You feed, reaction tools, gesture filters, background effects, and enhanced video-creation features.

That does not mean Musical.ly and TikTok had been completely unrelated apps. TikTok already existed internationally before the integration, and Musical.ly already had an established creator community. The merger joined an existing TikTok product with Musical.ly’s users, content, and social connections.

What happened to existing Musical.ly accounts?

Existing users did not generally have to create a new TikTok identity from scratch. TikTok said that Musical.ly users would be upgraded automatically when they updated the app. Their accounts, videos, and fan bases were transferred to the TikTok experience.

This automatic migration explains why many people experienced the change as a rebrand rather than the launch of an entirely new social network. The service’s name and interface changed, but the creators and much of the social graph continued across the transition.

The migration did not mean that every policy, feature, audience segment, or legal condition remained identical. TikTok continued changing its safety, privacy, wellbeing, and age-related systems after the merger. In particular, its February 2019 FTC announcement addressed additional protections for younger users in the United States.

What changed for users?

  • The brand: The Musical.ly name was replaced by TikTok.
  • The visual identity: TikTok introduced a unified logo and interface.
  • The product: The combined app incorporated features and creative tools associated with both services.
  • The discovery experience: TikTok emphasized feeds such as For You, alongside community and following-based discovery.
  • User continuity: Existing Musical.ly accounts, content, and fan relationships were moved into TikTok.
  • The platform’s future: Musical.ly no longer continued as a separate mainstream app after the integration.

The basic user proposition remained recognizable: record or edit a short mobile video, add music or effects, share it, and discover other creators. The surrounding interface, recommendation systems, policies, and features continued to develop under TikTok.

Was Musical.ly bought by TikTok?

Not exactly. TikTok did not independently buy Musical.ly. ByteDance, the company behind TikTok, acquired Musical.ly in November 2017. ByteDance had already launched TikTok internationally, and it later integrated Musical.ly into that product.

That distinction matters because saying “TikTok bought Musical.ly and changed its name the same day” collapses two separate events: the acquisition in 2017 and the product unification in August 2018.

Why do people call it a rebrand?

“Rebrand” is a reasonable shorthand for the consumer-facing result. Users saw the Musical.ly name replaced by TikTok, and the app continued as TikTok rather than retaining the older brand.

Technically, however, the transition involved an acquisition, a product merger, a new unified interface and logo, and the migration of an existing user base. “Musical.ly was absorbed into TikTok after ByteDance acquired it” is more precise than “the app was simply renamed.”

What made Musical.ly culturally important?

Musical.ly helped popularize a format built around short, music-driven mobile videos. Users could perform to songs, create lip-sync clips, apply effects, and share their work with a community. Those behaviors formed part of the foundation for the unified TikTok experience.

TikTok did not merely preserve the old name or operate Musical.ly as a separate archive. It used the merger to create a broader international short-form-video platform while carrying forward the creators and content that had made Musical.ly popular.

Recreating the short-form-video format today

If you are recreating the short-form-video format that made Musical.ly popular, a TikTok ring light or ring light with a phone holder can improve framing and lighting. It is optional creator equipment—not something Musical.ly or TikTok required—and the right choice depends on your phone, room, and recording style. A phone tripod, wireless lavalier microphone, or smartphone video kit can also help if you are making videos today, but these accessories are separate from the historical transition described above.

What is Musical.ly called now?

The surviving consumer brand is TikTok. Musical.ly is best understood as the predecessor service that ByteDance acquired and then integrated into TikTok in August 2018. The historical merger does not, by itself, establish TikTok’s current availability, ownership arrangements, user count, or regulatory status in any particular country; those issues change over time and require separate, current reporting.

Sources and historical note

The acquisition and merger chronology comes from ByteDance’s corporate history. Details about the August 2018 announcement, the TikTok name, the unified experience, and automatic migration of accounts, content, and fan bases come from TikTok’s official newsroom announcement dated August 2, 2018, describing the announcement made on August 1. The later safety and privacy context comes from TikTok’s February 2019 announcement about the FTC settlement associated with Musical.ly.
