There is no single upload-speed number that guarantees a stable YouTube stream running around the clock. Match your connection to the encoder’s outgoing bitrate, then leave headroom: YouTube recommends 20% room above the stream bitrate. For example, a 1080p30 H.264 stream at YouTube’s recommended 10 Mbps bitrate has an arithmetic planning baseline of 12.5 Mbps of available upload capacity. That is a planning estimate, not an uptime guarantee.
Calculate upload capacity from your stream settings
Start with the live encoder bitrate for your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec. The figures below use YouTube’s recommended H.264 live bitrates. The upload-capacity column is calculated by multiplying each bitrate by 1.25 to apply YouTube Help’s recommendation to leave 20% room; YouTube does not publish those calculated figures as separate upload-speed thresholds.
| Live video setting | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate | 1.25× planning baseline for available upload |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | 12.5 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 21.25 Mbps |
| 1440p30 | 21 Mbps | 26.25 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 34 Mbps | 42.5 Mbps |
| 2160p30 | 42 Mbps | 52.5 Mbps |
| 2160p60 | 50 Mbps | 62.5 Mbps |
These are YouTube Help’s current recommended H.264 live-ingestion bitrates, accessed in 2026, and arithmetic planning estimates based on its 20% headroom advice. They are not guarantees that a connection will remain online. Your usable upload capacity must be available to the encoder while it streams, after accounting for other traffic.
Codec changes the bitrate target
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists different recommended bitrates for AV1 and H.265: 6 Mbps for 720p30 or 720p60, 10 Mbps for 1080p30, 12 Mbps for 1080p60, 15 Mbps for 1440p30, 24 Mbps for 1440p60, 30 Mbps for 2160p30, and 35 Mbps for 2160p60. Use the figure that matches the codec actually selected rather than applying the H.264 table to every stream. The listed values are encoder bitrates, not ISP-plan requirements.

YouTube recommends a 128 Kbps stereo audio bitrate for RTMP/RTMPS. Audio is a small part of the total load, but the video, audio, and transport still have to fit within available upstream capacity. For the official settings and codec-specific table, see YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
What the 20% headroom means in practice
YouTube Help’s streaming tips say: “Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” Applied arithmetically, that means planning for available upload capacity of at least 1.25 times the target stream bitrate. For a 10 Mbps video stream, that calculation gives a 12.5 Mbps baseline. Treat it as a minimum planning buffer, not a promise that a nominal internet plan or speed test result will sustain an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast.

The relevant figure is upload capacity consistently available to the encoder, not your connection’s advertised download speed. Other people and devices using the same connection can consume upstream bandwidth, and access-network congestion or faults can interrupt a feed even when a speed test previously looked adequate.
Choose settings and test the actual connection
- Set the target quality. Choose resolution, frame rate, and codec in the encoder. Read the corresponding recommended live bitrate from YouTube’s live-ingestion guidance; do not substitute recommendations for uploading prerecorded videos.
- Compare against sustained upload capacity. YouTube recommends running a speed test to test upload bitrate. Test the connection the encoder will actually use, at times and under conditions representative of the stream. Compare available upload capacity—not download speed—with the selected bitrate plus headroom.
- Reduce competing traffic. Account for other users and devices sharing the upstream connection. If possible, connect a computer encoder to the router or switch over Ethernet rather than relying on Wi-Fi. A wired connection can avoid some wireless variability, but it cannot increase the ISP’s upstream capacity or prevent an ISP outage.
- Run a representative test stream. Use the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, audio, and typical motion. An unlisted test stream can help you check the actual configuration before a public broadcast. Watch YouTube’s Stream health panel and messages while it is running, and adjust the encoder or network if warnings appear.
- Recheck after changes. A different codec, higher frame rate, increased resolution, or another simultaneous destination changes the bandwidth target. Recalculate and test again rather than assuming the previous result still applies.
YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS encoder guidance also specifies CBR bitrate encoding, a recommended 2-second keyframe frequency (do not exceed 4 seconds), and support for H.264, H.265, or AV1 video at up to 60 fps. Follow the matching encoder settings in YouTube’s documentation when configuring the stream.

When 10 Mbps upload is enough—and when it is not
“10 Mbps upload” is not a universal answer. It is the 1.25× arithmetic baseline for an 8 Mbps H.264 stream, such as YouTube’s recommended 720p30 or 720p60 bitrate. It is below the calculated baseline for 1080p30 H.264, which is 12.5 Mbps, and below the 21.25 Mbps baseline for 1080p60 H.264. Whether a particular connection can sustain its measured capacity throughout a continuous stream must be tested in its real conditions.
Streaming to more than one destination
If the encoder sends separate outbound feeds to multiple destinations at once, add their target bitrates before estimating capacity. YouTube’s simulstreaming guidance recommends 1.5–2 times the combined target bitrate for stability, especially on shared connections. That higher range is specific guidance for simulstreaming; it is not a universal rule for a single-destination 24/7 stream. See YouTube’s simulstreaming guidance for its context.

Bandwidth does not guarantee 24/7 uptime
A bitrate calculation addresses how much outgoing capacity a feed needs; it cannot prevent an ISP outage, local network failure, or another interruption. YouTube’s reviewed guidance does not publish a dedicated Mbps threshold for a “stable 24/7 stream,” an uptime promise for an internet connection, or a universal backup-link design. For an always-on operation, assess sustained network performance and recovery separately from the bitrate calculation, and monitor the live stream’s health.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube channel that loops uploaded recordings rather than a live camera, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud after you upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo does not re-encode it, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
