Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo run a 4K 60fps YouTube Live stream on a spare PC, use it as the encoding and streaming computer: send it the source PC’s video and audio, capture that signal in OBS, then configure OBS for 3840Ă—2160 at 60 fps and YouTube’s recommended ingest settings. The spare PC, capture path and internet connection must each handle the target; a second computer alone does not guarantee 4K60.
Choose the right setup for your PCs
YouTube does not require a dedicated streaming PC. A spare PC is useful in a dual-PC streaming setup when you want the gaming or source computer to do less streaming work, but the source signal still has to reach the spare machine.
| Setup | Signal path | When it fits | Key constraint |
|---|---|---|---|
| One PC | OBS captures the game or other sources on the same PC that encodes and sends the stream. | The PC can run the source and encode the intended 4K60 output. | One machine handles both the source workload and streaming workload. |
| Two PCs | Source PC sends video and audio to the spare streaming PC, which captures, encodes and sends the stream. | You want streaming work separated from the source PC. | The capture device, host connection, spare PC encoder and upload connection must all support the target. |
In a two-PC arrangement, an HDMI capture card is a common way to deliver the source PC’s signal. Follow the manuals for your exact graphics output, display and capture device: some setups duplicate the source display and add the capture feed in broadcasting software. A capture card is not automatically necessary for every workflow, and a spare PC is not automatically capable of 4K60.
Check 4K60 compatibility before configuring OBS
Check the whole signal chain, not just a product headline or passthrough figure. In particular, distinguish the device’s maximum capture resolution and frame rate from its passthrough resolution and frame rate: 4K60 passthrough alone does not establish that the device captures 4K60 to the host PC.

- Host connection: Confirm the spare PC has the required USB connection or expansion slot and enough interface bandwidth for the selected capture mode.
- Spare PC encoder: Check the exact CPU or GPU encoder’s support for the codec and workload you intend to use. Do not assume that installing OBS means the PC can encode 4K60.
- Software and operating system: Verify that your device, drivers, operating system and OBS version support the chosen configuration. OBS’s official knowledge base links to its setup and system-requirement guides.
- Upload connection: Allow reliable headroom above the selected video bitrate for network variation and other traffic. The bitrate recommendations below are ingest settings, not a promise that a given connection will sustain them.
Do not choose hardware from passthrough claims alone, or assume a specific CPU/GPU minimum without checking the requirements for your particular card, encoder and OBS setup. No hardware benchmark is established here.
Connect the source PC to the spare PC
- Set the source output: Choose the resolution, frame rate and audio output that the capture device and streaming PC can accept. Check the source GPU and display arrangement for any limits.
- Connect video and audio: Route the source PC’s HDMI output to the capture device connected to the spare PC. If your setup uses a display plus duplicated output, verify the arrangement against the graphics card and capture-card manuals.
- Confirm capture capability: In the capture device’s utility or OBS, verify that the incoming signal is actually 3840×2160 at 60 fps, not merely passed through to a monitor at that mode.
- Check audio routing: Select the capture device’s audio in OBS or configure another deliberate audio path. Confirm that game or program audio is present and synchronized with the picture.
A secondary dual-PC setup guide illustrates the general capture-card signal path, but check current compatibility against the manuals for the devices you actually own.

Configure OBS for YouTube Live at 4K60
- Add the incoming source: On the spare PC, add the capture device as a source in OBS and build the scene you intend to broadcast. Check both the picture and audio meters before setting up the live event.
- Set the video output: Configure OBS for a 3840Ă—2160 output resolution and 60 fps. Set the canvas and output to match if you want the stream output at 4K; confirm that scaling or a mismatched source has not reduced the actual output.
- Select a supported encoder and codec: Choose an encoder available on the spare PC. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 for live encoding, but the choices visible in OBS depend on your hardware and software. YouTube’s encoder setup page lists encoder options.
- Set rate control and keyframes: Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends two seconds and says the interval should not exceed four seconds.
- Choose the ingest protocol: Prefer RTMPS. YouTube’s live settings also list RTMP; use the connection option supported by your encoder configuration.
- Set the video bitrate for the selected codec: Use YouTube’s 4K/2160p60 recommendations in the table below as a starting point. These values are for live ingest, not prerecorded-video uploads.
- Connect to YouTube Live: In YouTube Live Control Room, configure OBS with the stream key and connection details. Keep the stream key private. YouTube normally detects the incoming resolution and frame rate automatically; check the resulting stream information and health rather than assuming the configured OBS output has arrived unchanged.
For the other SDR encoder details, YouTube lists square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, Rec. 709 and 8-bit depth. These are advanced settings; control names and availability vary among OBS encoders, so do not force a setting that your selected encoder does not expose or support. For stereo audio, YouTube’s guidance is AAC or MP3 at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Its RTMP/RTMPS 5.1 guidance specifies AAC at 48 kHz and 384 kbps.
YouTube automatically transcodes live video into viewer output formats, but that does not eliminate the need for a stable, correctly configured stream from OBS. See YouTube’s live encoder settings for current ingest guidance.

Use YouTube’s 4K live bitrate recommendations
The following are YouTube’s live-ingest values for 4K/2160p, as listed on its encoder settings page accessed in 2026. Minimum and recommended values are not guarantees of performance on your PC or network.
| Codec | 4K60 minimum | 4K60 recommended | 4K30 recommended fallback |
|---|---|---|---|
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps | 30 Mbps (8 Mbps minimum) |
| H.264 | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps | 42 Mbps (11 Mbps minimum) |
Use the recommendation for the codec actually being sent. AV1 or HEVC has a lower listed recommended bitrate than H.264 at 4K60, but your spare PC must support the selected encoder and YouTube ingest configuration. If the PC cannot sustain 60 fps or the connection cannot reliably carry the chosen bitrate, 4K30 is a possible fallback; it is a different target, not a 4K60 stream. If the network cannot hold the selected rate consistently, reduce the stream settings rather than treating YouTube’s recommendation as mandatory.

Test the complete stream and monitor its health
Before an important broadcast, test the complete scene with audio and motion similar to the real event. A static desktop test does not exercise the same capture, encoding and network load as moving video.
- Verify that YouTube receives 3840Ă—2160 at 60 fps and the intended codec.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health messages while live; YouTube recommends monitoring stream health during the event.
- Check OBS for dropped frames and whether the encoder keeps up with the scene.
- Listen for missing, doubled or out-of-sync audio, and confirm the intended microphone and program audio are routed.
- Check that the capture signal remains stable when the source changes scenes, resolution or refresh settings.
- Test upload stability under the same conditions as the broadcast, including other traffic on the connection.
For network-related instability, compare the available upload capacity with the selected bitrate and investigate competing traffic or connection drops. A wired Ethernet connection may help in a setup where Wi-Fi is unstable, but YouTube does not require Ethernet.

Understand latency and HDR requirements
Latency
YouTube says 4K/2160 streams do not have the low-latency option and run at normal latency. If low-latency interaction is essential, account for this before committing to a 4K stream.
HDR
HDR is a separate advanced configuration, not an automatic consequence of choosing 4K60. YouTube’s HDR live-streaming instructions say HDR live streaming currently requires HEVC and describe additional OBS configuration. The source, encoder, profile, bit depth, color format, color space and stream-key setup all matter. Follow that guide for the exact supported configuration; do not apply SDR settings unchanged and assume the result is HDR.
Troubleshoot common 4K60 problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Capture preview is below 4K60 | The source output, capture mode, host interface or OBS source is limited to a lower mode. | Check the source output and the card’s capture specification, not only its passthrough specification. Verify the host connection and OBS source properties. |
| OBS output or YouTube stream is not 4K60 | Output resolution or frame rate is set lower, the encoder cannot keep up, or YouTube is receiving a different mode. | Check OBS canvas/output resolution, 60 fps setting, encoder load and YouTube’s received stream information. |
| Dropped frames or stream-health warnings | Upload instability, competing network traffic or an encoder that cannot sustain the workload. | Review OBS statistics and YouTube stream health. Reduce bitrate, resolution or frame rate until the complete system is stable. |
| Video works but audio is missing or delayed | Audio is not included in the capture path, the wrong device is selected, or the separate audio route is unsynchronized. | Check OBS source audio settings and meters, then test synchronization with the full scene. |
| HDR option or expected HDR output is absent | The source, codec, profile, color settings or stream-key configuration does not meet YouTube’s HDR requirements. | Use YouTube’s HDR guide and verify every part of the source-to-encoder chain. |
| Stream has more delay than expected | 4K/2160 streaming uses normal latency on YouTube rather than its low-latency option. | Set expectations for normal latency or reconsider whether 4K is necessary for the event. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a prerecorded program looping on YouTube rather than stream a live PC source, StreamNeo is a different option: it plays uploaded videos and does not go live from a camera. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Your video streams as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers or re-encoding. It can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream.
The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are supported in India; card checkout is available worldwide. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free day.
