For a simple vMix playlist on a dedicated streaming computer, use 8GB as the vendor’s general recommended baseline and 16GB as the more practical planning target. vMix does not publish a RAM requirement or stability guarantee specifically for every 24/7 YouTube playlist. Your full workload—especially cameras, graphics, recording, multiple outputs and other running programs—matters as much as the playlist.
What vMix’s RAM guidance actually says
vMix’s Supported Hardware page lists 4GB DDR4 as the minimum and 8GB DDR4 as recommended. Those are general system specifications, not results from a test of a nonstop playlist. Separately, vMix’s computer purchasing guide says “16GB of memory is recommended for most productions.” That guide was last updated November 11, 2020, so treat its RAM advice as broad production guidance rather than a playlist-specific requirement.
In practical terms, 8GB is a reasonable baseline to consider for a simple setup; 16GB provides more headroom and is the safer planning target for a dedicated streaming PC. Neither figure guarantees continuous operation, and 16GB is not a tested minimum for every playlist.
Choose RAM for the whole vMix production
Simple playlist and one output
If the machine mainly plays a set of media files and sends one stream, start with the 8GB general baseline and, if you are choosing or upgrading hardware, plan for 16GB where the computer supports it. vMix says its List input can play videos back to back and loop without requiring all videos to be loaded at once, which can reduce the resources needed compared with loading every video. It does not publish a RAM-saving figure.

Cameras, graphics, recording or more outputs
For a production with camera inputs, overlays, concurrent recording, multiple outputs, higher resolutions or other demanding applications, the simple-playlist estimate applies less well. vMix identifies graphics-card speed as a factor in how many HD inputs and simultaneous recording, streaming and outputs a system can handle; its purchasing guide also discusses CPU and GPU roles. Assess the full computer rather than treating RAM as the only capacity limit.
Check the computer before buying memory
Before purchasing a broad category such as a 16GB DDR4 RAM kit, check your computer or motherboard documentation for supported memory type, module form factor, maximum capacity and available slots. vMix’s general DDR4 specification does not establish which module fits a particular computer. Its purchasing guide recommends using at least two memory modules on most computers rather than one, but your system’s supported configuration takes precedence.

Use the right vMix playback feature
List: files played back to back
Use a List input when you want video or audio files to play sequentially as one input. Its controls include Auto Next and Loop, and it supports M3U files. The Loop control returns the list to its beginning after it reaches the end.
PlayList: switching among separate inputs
Use vMix’s separate PlayList feature when you want to automate sequential switching among inputs. Its Loop option starts the playlist from the beginning after completion. Which feature fits depends on whether your videos belong in one List input or are separate vMix inputs; neither feature description specifies a universal memory footprint.

Can vMix loop videos 24/7?
vMix describes List and PlayList as useful for basic 24/7 streaming, but looping playback is not the same as a guarantee of unattended uptime. vMix’s scheduling article, last updated January 17, 2025, says: “vMix is primarily designed for live streaming single events and as such does not support time of day scheduling.” A Loop setting repeats playback; it does not establish that a system will run indefinitely without interruption.
There is no published vMix figure here for RAM usage by playlist length, file count, codec, resolution or continuous runtime. There is also no controlled comparison showing that a particular RAM configuration will outperform another on the same nonstop playlist. Keep the recommendation conditional on your media, production workload and hardware.

Set up a reliable DIY playlist stream
- Confirm the computer’s capacity. Check the manufacturer’s specifications for supported RAM type, maximum capacity and slots. Consider the CPU, GPU and storage alongside memory, particularly if you will use cameras, graphics, recording or additional outputs.
- Organize the playback. Add the files to a vMix List input for sequential playback of a media library, or use PlayList to switch among separate inputs. Enable Auto Next as needed and enable Loop if you want playback to return to the beginning when it reaches the end.
- Build the YouTube output. Configure vMix to stream to YouTube Live and use the stream settings appropriate to your production. This RAM guidance does not establish a particular bitrate, resolution or keyframe setting; choose those based on the video format, upload capacity and YouTube’s current requirements.
- Check playback and output before leaving it unattended. Verify that the playlist advances and loops as intended and that the YouTube stream is receiving video. A RAM figure by itself does not validate the entire setup or promise uninterrupted streaming.
