YouTube does not specify a minimum amount of RAM for watching a 4K 60fps live playlist. Do not upgrade memory based on that use alone. For playback, YouTube gives an approximate sustained connection-speed guideline of 20 Mbps for 4K UHD; codec support, hardware decoding, and the rest of the computer also matter.
Watching a live playlist is different from broadcasting one
If you mean watching existing live videos in a browser, the PC is decoding and playing the video; it is not encoding a live stream for YouTube. YouTube says it transcodes incoming live streams into formats for viewers, and its broadcaster encoder recommendations therefore do not set a viewer’s RAM requirement. YouTube’s system requirements and supported devices guidance does not give a RAM figure for this scenario.
YouTube Help notes that some premium videos, including live streams, require a faster connection and greater processing power for optimal playback. That does not translate into a published memory threshold.
What matters for watching 4K60
Connection stability
YouTube’s approximate guideline for 4K UHD playback is a sustained 20 Mbps connection. This is a network-speed figure, not a RAM amount or an upload setting. A connection that fluctuates or is shared heavily may still cause buffering even if its advertised speed is higher.

Codec and hardware decoding
The PC, operating system, and browser need to handle the codec YouTube serves. Mozilla explains that 4K YouTube playback in Firefox depends on the hardware, operating system, and YouTube’s codec choices; if hardware decoding is unavailable, the browser may rely on software decoding. That can increase processor load and contribute to stuttering, without establishing a particular RAM requirement. See Mozilla’s Firefox 4K playback guidance.
Available memory and other work
Memory available after the operating system, browser, and other applications are running can affect the overall experience. A PC used at the same time for gaming, video editing, or many demanding applications may need more RAM for those workloads. That is a separate reason to consider an upgrade; watching a YouTube playlist alone does not establish one.

How to decide whether a RAM upgrade is warranted
- Check playback conditions first. Confirm that the connection can sustain YouTube’s approximate 20 Mbps 4K UHD guideline and that it is stable while the playlist plays.
- Check the actual playback load. Update the browser and operating system, verify hardware decoding is available for the video codec, and look at CPU and memory use while the problem occurs.
- Reduce competing load. YouTube recommends closing other tabs, browsers, and programs when troubleshooting playback. Then test the playlist again.
- Upgrade only for an identified need. If memory is consistently constrained across your normal tasks, assess the PC’s supported memory generation, capacity, and slot configuration before buying anything. The available evidence does not identify a RAM kit or minimum capacity for this viewing use.
If you mean running your own continuous live playlist
That is a different job: the PC or another service must send an encoded stream to YouTube. YouTube’s current live encoder recommendations for 4K/2160p at 60 fps are 35 Mbps ingestion bitrate with AV1 or H.265, or 50 Mbps with H.264. These are recommended outgoing video bitrates, not viewer download speeds or RAM specifications. YouTube also recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom for sending a live stream. See YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance and YouTube’s streaming upload bandwidth guidance.
Or let it run in the cloud
For an uploaded-video playlist that should keep running on YouTube, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
