CameraFi Live has no single fixed mobile-data figure: your phone’s outgoing stream bitrate and how long you stream determine the estimate. As a quick rule, each sustained 1 Mbps uses about 0.45 decimal GB per hour before network overhead. Multiply the total bitrate—including audio—by 0.45, then by the number of hours.
Estimate data use from your stream bitrate
A megabit is one million bits. Dividing by eight converts bits to bytes; multiplying by 3,600 seconds gives 450,000,000 bytes per hour for every sustained 1 Mbps. That is 0.45 decimal GB per hour, or about 450 MB.
Use the total outgoing bitrate, not video bitrate alone. For example, a 4 Mbps total stream running for three hours is about 4 × 0.45 × 3 = 5.4 GB before overhead.

These are arithmetic estimates, not measurements of CameraFi Live or a mobile carrier’s billing. Actual device or carrier totals can vary with protocol overhead, bitrate changes, reconnects, and other app activity.

How much data do YouTube stream settings use?
YouTube’s recommended encoder rates are video rates. Its recommended stereo audio rate is 128 Kbps, or 0.128 Mbps. The estimates below add that audio rate to the video rate, then apply the 0.45 GB-per-hour conversion. YouTube notes that recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate; the figures are examples, not guaranteed CameraFi Live options or measured app use. YouTube’s live encoder settings provide the recommendations, while CameraFi Live’s product information notes that available resolution and frame rate vary by device.

These estimates describe the phone’s upload to YouTube. YouTube transcodes a live stream into different playback formats for viewers; their playback quality does not change this outgoing-data calculation.

Choose a bitrate that fits your connection and data allowance
Higher recommended bitrates for resolution or frame rate generally mean more data use. A lower bitrate can conserve data, but trades off visual quality; there is no single best setting for every phone, scene, or network. CameraFi Live’s available choices depend on the device.
- Check upload speed where you will stream. Download speed does not tell you how reliably the phone can send the stream.
- Leave upload headroom. CameraFi Live Team guidance recommends setting bitrate at about 75% of available upload speed; its guidance also cautions that platform server status can affect results. See CameraFi’s mobile streaming quality tips.
- Use one network connection. CameraFi advises against keeping Wi-Fi and mobile data enabled together because switching between them can disconnect the stream.
- Test the actual event conditions. YouTube recommends testing in advance with representative audio and movement, then monitoring stream health during the event. A short test helps expose instability before a long broadcast begins.
What can make the recorded total differ?
- Bitrate variation: the arithmetic assumes the rate stays constant. If the outgoing rate changes, actual use changes with it.
- Connection interruptions: reconnects and switching networks can affect the data total and may interrupt the broadcast.
- Overhead and other traffic: network protocol overhead and unrelated phone activity are outside the 0.45 GB-per-hour conversion.
- Carrier accounting: a carrier’s metered total need not match the decimal estimate exactly.
