For a live broadcast, upload speed matters most: your connection must carry the stream’s bitrate steadily, with extra capacity left for normal network variation and other devices. There is no universal minimum. Choose a bitrate for your platform, resolution, frame rate and codec, then test the connection under realistic conditions. If you’re watching a stream, download speed is the relevant figure instead.
How to estimate the upload speed you need
- Choose your platform and video settings. Resolution, frame rate and codec determine the encoder bitrate. Use the destination platform’s current settings rather than assuming one bitrate suits every service.
- Check the recommended bitrate. Treat it as the data rate your encoder sends to the platform, not as a broadband-plan specification. For YouTube examples, see the table below.
- Measure upload capacity where and when you’ll stream. A speed test measures your connection at that moment; it does not establish that the same speed will be sustained throughout a broadcast.
- Leave headroom. Your available upload should exceed the configured bitrate so ordinary variation and other devices’ traffic do not use all the capacity the stream needs.
- Test the actual stream before relying on it. Check the platform’s stream-health feedback and adjust settings if the connection cannot carry them reliably.
YouTube’s recommended live encoder bitrates
YouTube’s current encoder guidance gives the following recommended ingestion bitrates. The figures are Mbps and apply to the listed resolution and frame rate; codec changes the recommendation. They are not universal minimum internet-plan speeds.
| Resolution and frame rate | H.264 | AV1 or H.265 |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 1440p30 | 21 Mbps | 15 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 34 Mbps | 24 Mbps |
| 4K30 | 42 Mbps | 30 Mbps |
| 4K60 | 50 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
For example, YouTube recommends 17 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p60 and 8 Mbps for H.264 at 720p60. Those are encoder targets, not proof that a connection measuring exactly that speed will be stable. YouTube advises choosing settings your connection can reliably handle, running an upload speed test, testing before going live and monitoring stream health. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
How much margin should you leave?
Twitch’s FAQ gives a general practice of having upload speed equal to the configured stream bitrate plus 30%. Its example says a 6 Mbps stream may require at least 8 Mbps upload. Twitch also notes that other devices using upload bandwidth affect what remains available to the stream. This is general guidance, not a guarantee that every connection meeting the threshold will be reliable. See Twitch’s How Do I Stream FAQ.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Apply the idea to your own settings: start with the bitrate your platform and encoder call for, then ensure your measured upload has spare capacity above it. If other people or devices share the connection, their traffic can reduce that spare capacity. A single speed-test result cannot account for all variation over a full stream.
Broadcaster upload speed is not viewer download speed
Broadcasters send video to a platform, so their key internet-speed figure is upload. Viewers receive the video, so download is the relevant direction for playback. Twitch lists viewer download guidance of 3–6 Mbps or higher for 720p60 and 7–12 Mbps or higher for 1080p60. Those viewing figures do not describe a broadcaster’s required upload speed. Twitch’s playback troubleshooting guidance addresses viewer playback issues.

What to check if a live stream is unstable
- Upload capacity is close to the encoder bitrate: lower the stream quality or bitrate to a setting the connection can sustain, then test again.
- Other devices are using the connection: account for their upload traffic when checking available headroom; Twitch specifically notes that other devices affect bandwidth available to a stream.
- The speed test looks adequate but stream health is poor: a test is only a measurement at one moment. Test the actual stream before the event and monitor the platform’s stream-health indicators while live.
- You are applying a viewer-speed figure to broadcasting: check upload capacity and the encoder bitrate instead; download guidance is for receiving a stream.
Twitch also publishes broadcasting guidelines. Platform guidance can change, so consult the destination’s current documentation when setting up a broadcast.

If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live around the clock using uploaded videos, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Upload-time upload bandwidth still matters, but it is separate from the sustained connection needed to transmit a live feed from your own computer. StreamNeo accepts uploaded videos as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
