Smith’s reported annual earnings are about $39 million, often rounded to $40 million. Sports Illustrated reported that estimate in September 2025, combining reported ESPN and SiriusXM contract figures with a podcast estimate. It is not a company-confirmed salary or the value of one contract.
What the reported $39 million includes
Sports Illustrated’s September 17, 2025 report put Smith’s annual earnings at $39 million. It attributed contract details to Andrew Marchand of The Athletic. The figures below are reported amounts, not compensation disclosed by ESPN or SiriusXM.
| Revenue source | Reported amount | What the figure represents | Evidence and qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| ESPN | $20 million a year | Annualized amount associated with Smith’s five-year ESPN deal | Sports Illustrated’s reported figure; ESPN’s announcement did not disclose compensation. |
| SiriusXM | Approximately $12 million a year | Annualized amount for a reported three-year, $36 million agreement | Sports Illustrated reported the terms, attributing them to Andrew Marchand of The Athletic. SiriusXM did not confirm the price in its announcement. |
| Podcast | $7 million a year | Podcast revenue included in the reported estimate | Sports Illustrated’s estimate; no official statement verifying this amount was identified. |
| Combined estimate | $39 million annually | The reported annual total across the three sources above | Sports Illustrated’s estimate, not an official salary disclosure. |
What is known about Smith’s ESPN deal
ESPN announced a multi-year renewal on March 7, 2025. Smith said he expected to remain with the Disney/ESPN family for “at least” the next five years. The network said he would continue as a fixture on weekday morning show First Take and appear across ESPN programming; its announcement did not state a contract price.
The Associated Press separately reported that the deal was worth at least $100 million over five years, citing a person familiar with the agreement. That person was not authorized to discuss the financial terms and spoke anonymously. This is attributed reporting, not an ESPN disclosure. The reported minimum total should not be mistaken for an exact contract value.

Why $40 million is a rounded estimate, not a confirmed salary
The headline-sized figure combines different kinds of evidence: an ESPN contract amount reported by a news outlet, SiriusXM contract terms attributed to a reporter, and a podcast estimate. ESPN and SiriusXM have not publicly disclosed the financial terms in their official announcements, and the podcast amount is not officially verified. Calling the rounded total “a $40 million salary” would overstate what is established.
For a personal perspective on Smith’s career, his 2023 memoir is Straight Shooter: A Memoir of Second Chances and First Takes, which SiriusXM identifies as a New York Times bestseller. The memoir is separate from the reported contract figures.
