The cost depends mainly on your PC’s measured electricity use and your local electricity tariff—not on a universal “24/7 streaming” rate. Calculate it as average wall power (W) ÷ 1,000 × streaming hours × electricity price per kWh. PRISM’s basic desktop live-streaming features were described as free in its June 5, 2025 announcement; optional premium features may cost extra.
Calculate your monthly electricity cost
For a 30-day month of continuous streaming, use 720 hours. Measure the complete PC at the wall while PRISM is running the scene and encoder settings you plan to use. A power supply’s rated wattage is not the same as the computer’s actual draw.
Monthly electricity cost = average wall power (W) Ă· 1,000 Ă— 720 Ă— your electricity price per kWh.
For example, if your measured PC draw is 100 W and your tariff is 0.20 currency units per kWh, the PC’s 30-day electricity use costs 14.40 currency units: 100 ÷ 1,000 × 720 × 0.20. This is a hypothetical illustration, not a typical PC estimate; your measured draw and tariff determine your result.

- Average measured draw while streaming: ___ W

If you want the total for the whole setup, measure it together or add the monitor, router/modem, lighting, or cooling separately, but only if those devices are not already included in your measurement. Electricity prices depend on your location and plan.
What PRISM itself costs
PRISM Live Studio’s June 5, 2025 announcement said, “Basic features will remain free to use without a subscription,” and included live streaming among those features. A basic single-platform YouTube stream therefore does not require a PRISM subscription according to that announcement. Optional PRISM Plus features include desktop multistreaming to up to six channels, premium templates, and ad removal. Keep other possible costs separate: count an internet charge only if your actual plan imposes an upgrade, overage, or data-cap fee. A bitrate recommendation is a stream-setting guide, not a broadband price.
Can a low-budget spare PC handle the stream?

If your PC is below the listed minimum, that alone does not establish what will happen with your specific scene and settings. Simplify the workload and check PRISM’s performance indicators before committing to unattended operation. If the stream must stay live without supervision, also consider what happens after a crash, power interruption, or lost connection; the published hardware figures do not promise recovery or continuous stability.
Choose settings that balance quality, bandwidth, and PC load
Start with a manageable output
YouTube’s H.264 guidance recommends 5 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps and 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. These are encoder-setting recommendations; test the chosen output against your available upload connection. YouTube recommended live encoder settings

Higher resolution and bitrate can increase both network demand and the work your PC must do. If the connection cannot sustain the selected bitrate reliably, reduce the output rather than assuming the stream will adapt cleanly. Actual ISP pricing or data-cap charges depend on your plan.
Lower the workload before upgrading hardware
- Simplify scenes and remove sources you do not need.
- Lower output resolution, bitrate, or frame rate if the stream is unstable.
- For limited processing power, PRISM guidance says to use 30 fps or lower.
- Close resource-heavy programs running on the PC.
- If an appropriate discrete GPU is present, try hardware encoding to reduce CPU load.
Change one setting at a time and observe whether dropped frames, encoding lag, or instability improves. PRISM’s guidance recommends these load-reduction steps; it does not establish that every low-end PC can stream every scene at a particular quality. PRISM performance optimization guide

Check YouTube eligibility and decide how to handle archives
YouTube requires a channel to be verified and to have had no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days before it can livestream. Confirm eligibility before spending time tuning PRISM. YouTube live-streaming eligibility
A continuously available live broadcast and a complete saved replay are different outcomes. YouTube says, “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” If you need a complete archive, do not rely on one uninterrupted 24-hour YouTube replay: plan shorter segments under 12 hours and maintain a local recording backup. Troubleshoot the budget and setup
- Your electricity estimate seems unexpectedly high or low: measure the whole PC at the wall while the intended PRISM scene is running; do not use the power supply’s rated wattage as actual consumption.
- The stream drops frames or becomes unstable: reduce resolution, bitrate, or frame rate; simplify the scene and close demanding applications. Check that upload capacity can sustain the selected bitrate.
- The PC struggles to encode: try 30 fps or lower and, if the machine has an appropriate discrete GPU, test hardware encoding.
- You cannot start a YouTube live stream: verify the channel and check for live-streaming restrictions within the prior 90 days.
- The 24-hour stream has no complete replay: YouTube may not capture streams longer than 12 hours. Use planned shorter segments and a local backup if the archive matters.
- Your bill includes more than the PC: include other always-on equipment only when it is part of your setup, and check your ISP plan separately for applicable data caps or overages.
