There is no single price for the upload data used by a 24/7 YouTube stream. The stream’s bitrate determines roughly how much data it sends; your internet plan determines whether that usage costs extra. At a constant 1 Mbps, a 30-day stream sends about 324 GB (decimal), or roughly 302 GiB, before network overhead. Multiply that estimate by your total stream bitrate in Mbps, then check your ISP’s allowance and billing rules.
Estimate the monthly upload volume
Use this calculation for a basic estimate:
Monthly decimal GB ≈ bitrate in Mbps × seconds in the month ÷ 8,000
For a 30-day month, that becomes:
Monthly decimal GB ≈ bitrate in Mbps × 324
Use the encoder’s total bitrate, including audio if it is reported separately. A 31-day month works out to about 334.8 GB per Mbps; a 28-day month, about 302.4 GB per Mbps. These are arithmetic estimates, not measured usage. They exclude protocol overhead, bitrate changes, reconnections and other household traffic. ISPs may display data in decimal or binary units, so check how your account meter labels usage.
Examples using YouTube’s recommended encoder bitrates
YouTube’s recommended bitrate varies with resolution, frame rate and codec. The estimates below multiply the listed bitrate by 324 for a 30-day month; they are not guarantees of actual transfer volume. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), but the configured bitrate and network transfer can vary. Its automatic transcoding creates viewer formats; it does not eliminate the broadcaster’s upload.

| AV1/H.265, 1080p/30 fps | 10 Mbps | 3,240 GB |
These figures use YouTube Help’s recommended encoder bitrates; they are calculations, not measured stream usage. The H.264 recommendations are 5 Mbps for 1080p/30 fps and 6 Mbps for 1080p/60 fps. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
What your internet provider may charge
The data estimate alone cannot tell you the dollar cost. You may pay only your normal subscription price if the plan includes unlimited data or your total use stays within its allowance. On a capped or metered plan, the stream may count toward the limit under that provider’s rules. Other household use may count too. Check the plan for included data, overage fees, throttling, recurring fees and any regional or account-specific terms.

Provider policies are not universal
Xfinity’s FAQ, accessed in 2026, says its new internet plans include unlimited data and that a 1.2 TB threshold applies only to certain older plans. For eligible accounts subject to that policy, it describes a courtesy month for a first overage in a 12-month period, followed by $10 per additional 50 GB, up to $100 per month. Plan-type and regional exclusions apply, so this is an example of one provider’s policy, not a general broadband rate. Xfinity also cites an average monthly use of about 498 GB for its customers; that provider-stated average is not an estimate of what a 24/7 stream will use. Check Xfinity’s 1.2 TB data plan FAQ for the policy details.
Use the plan label and account meter
Broadband facts labels can help compare offers. Xfinity says its labels show plan price, optional and recurring fees, upload and download speeds, latency and included data. Review the offer for your address, then confirm the terms attached to your own account. See Xfinity’s broadband facts label information.

Check whether your plan can handle the stream
Work through these checks before estimating an extra charge:
- Find the configured total encoder bitrate in Mbps, including audio if it is listed separately.
- Multiply it by about 324 for a 30-day estimate in decimal GB; adjust for the billing month’s length and allow for overhead.
- Add other household usage that the ISP counts toward the same allowance.
- Compare the total with the plan’s included data, overage rules and any throttling policy.
- Compare the cost of staying on the plan, changing plans or adding an unlimited-data option with remote hosting if that is suitable for your stream.
For a 5 Mbps H.264 1080p/30 fps stream, the estimated 30-day upload alone is about 1,620 GB decimal. For 6 Mbps H.264 1080p/60 fps, it is about 1,944 GB decimal. Both estimates exceed 1.2 TB before other household traffic, but whether that creates a charge depends on your particular ISP plan and account.

Could remote hosting reduce home upload usage?
If you run the encoder at home, the continuous stream’s upload travels over your home internet connection. A cloud-hosted service can move that continuous upload to remote infrastructure instead. It does not make internet service or streaming costs disappear: compare the hosting charge and limits with your broadband options, and consider any home internet you still need for other purposes. StreamNeo describes a service that streams uploaded videos to YouTube from the cloud; details are at StreamNeo.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams uploaded video to YouTube, not from a camera. Every slot supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are accepted in India; card checkout is available worldwide.
